Copper prices are staging a notable recovery, driven by tightening market fundamentals and persistent supply setbacks across major global mining regions. According to Commerzbank analyst Barbara Lambrecht, recent figures released by the International Copper Study Group point to a sharp shift in the metal's supply and demand balance.

Significant Deficit in June

Data from the International Copper Study Group indicates that the copper market experienced a substantial under-supply during the month of June. Following seasonal adjustments, the deficit reached a considerable 85,000 tons. Consequently, the accumulated surplus for the first half of the year plummeted to a mere 32,000 tons.

Global Mining Challenges and Output Issues

Compounding these inventory pressures are ongoing production troubles outside of China and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, alongside specific operational setbacks in Chile and the DRC. Reports indicate that China's domestic copper output faltered recently, while severe flooding in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is expected to force a major mining enterprise there to revise its production forecasts downward.

LME Warrants and Withdrawal Orders

Further stoking fears of a tightening physical market are reports surrounding cancelled warrants on the London Metal Exchange. Although LME copper inventories have ticked up slightly, standing orders for the withdrawal of LME copper have surged by more than 50,000 tons.

Supportive Price Environment

The convergence of shrinking half-year surpluses, unexpected mine disruptions, and surging withdrawal demand is creating a much tighter market balance. This tightening supply dynamic provides a solid foundation for a more supportive pricing environment for copper moving forward.
