Indian equities are positioned for a volatile and range-bound trading session on Thursday, October 29, as market participants digest the monetary policy outcome from the US Federal Reserve alongside elevated international crude oil prices and movements in the domestic currency. While the American central bank kept its benchmark borrowing costs unchanged, market participants continue to parse commentary regarding the subsequent trajectory of interest rates, which holds considerable weight for global equity markets and near-term capital flows.
Benchmark Indices Conclude Wednesday Session in the Red
Domestic shares witnessed widespread caution on Wednesday as traders hesitated to make fresh directional bets before the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) released its scheduled rate decision. The benchmark Nifty 50 surrendered 0.22 percent to conclude trading at 22,698, while the 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 0.48 percent to close at 73,246. Headwinds from international energy markets exacerbated the weakness, with Brent crude stubbornly holding above $110 per barrel, dampening risk appetite and constraining upward momentum across heavyweights.
Federal Reserve Keeps Rates Unchanged as Analysts Weigh Forward Guidance
The Federal Reserve left the target range for its federal funds rate unchanged at 3.75 percent to 4 percent following the conclusion of its October monetary policy meeting. Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research, Wealth Management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, observed: "Indian equities are likely to remain range-bound ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision, with a rate hold widely expected. However, the Fed's guidance on the future rate trajectory will be crucial for near-term market direction. Crude oil prices and the rupee will also remain key monitorable." For domestic shares, intermarket signals, crude benchmarks, and currency trends will serve as the guiding forces governing price action through Thursday's session.
Nifty 50 Chart Demonstrates Indecision via High-Wave Candlesticks
From a technical standpoint, the Nifty 50 printed a second successive high-wave candle on its daily chart. This formation, distinguished by a compressed real body enclosed between elongated upper and lower shadows, illustrates an equilibrium between buying and selling forces alongside elevated intraday volatility. The index experienced early weakness during Wednesday's trading, sliding to inspect the 22,500 threshold during the initial half of the session. Renewed value buying emerged at these lower zones, allowing the index to stage an intraday rebound of approximately 200 points from its trough to settle close to the 22,700 mark.
Critical Resistance Zone Identified at 22,800 to 22,830
The Nifty has been hovering in proximity to its 20-day exponential moving average (EMA) while aligning with the 50 percent Fibonacci retracement level of the preceding week's sharp decline from 23,175 down to 22,372. These technical indicators converge to establish an overhead barrier between 22,800 and 22,830 that market participants must overcome to confirm any sustainable upside reversal.
Pabitro Mukherjee, Deputy Vice President-Research at Bajaj Broking, noted: "Nifty in the last two sessions is trading around the 20 days EMA and the 50% retracement of the last week decline from 23,175-22,372 placed around 22,800-22,830 levels. Going ahead a follow strength above Tuesday's high 22,830 will open further pullback towards 23,000 and 23,175 levels being the confluence of last week high and 50 days EMA."
Consequently, the 22,830 level stands as the primary technical gatekeeper for any sustained upward push. A decisive breakout above this hurdle could clear a trajectory towards 23,000, followed by the secondary hurdle at 23,175. Conversely, failure to surmount this ceiling would likely confine the index within an extended consolidation band ranging from 22,370 to 22,830. On the downside, prompt support rests at 22,500, marking Wednesday's intra-session low and matching a retracement reference of the latest upswing. A breach below this floor could trigger technical deterioration, whereas defensive buying around these levels may preserve the prevailing trading channel.
Bank Nifty Stages Intraday Reversal Off Critical Base
The Bank Nifty displayed a bullish candle on Wednesday, reflecting aggressive buying interest around the previous month's trough. The banking gauge faced heavy initial headwinds, slipping to an intraday base of 53,626 during early morning exchanges. Subsequently, banking constituents witnessed widespread accumulation, enabling the gauge to stage an energetic rally of over 550 points from its low point and settle near 54,250.
Even with this notable recovery, the broader technical structure across the banking index retains a corrective profile. Immediate expectations point toward technical consolidation between 53,600 and 54,650, where the upper band presents formidable overhead resistance. A sustained close above 54,650 would bolster bullish sentiment and open up pathways toward 55,200.
Support Floors at 53,626 and the 53,000 Milestone
Pabitro Mukherjee further explained the structural dynamics of the banking gauge: "Weakness below recent low 53,626 will signal extension of decline towards key short-term support at 53,200-53,000 being the confluence of the trendline support joining previous major lows and key retracement of the previous major up move."
The 53,626 mark constitutes a vital technical pivot for Bank Nifty. Any sustained violation of this foundation could deepen selling pressures toward the secondary demand zone at 53,200 to 53,000. Alternatively, defending this base preserves room for ongoing accumulation, leaving traders focused on whether buyers can muster sufficient momentum to breach the 54,650 barrier. As Thursday's trading gets underway, global equity sentiment, crude supply variables, and currency fluctuations will dictate whether benchmark indices break from their holding patterns.
