Indian equity benchmarks halted their recent losing streak on Friday, staging a firm recovery driven by an aggressive rally in Information Technology stocks. Strong quarterly earnings reported by US chipmaker Nvidia and an optimistic demand forecast for Artificial Intelligence technologies infused fresh energy into domestic tech counters, enabling both the Sensex and the Nifty to finish the trading week in positive territory. However, overall market gains remained measured as investors refrained from creating heavy fresh positions ahead of crucial policy signals from the US Federal Reserve chief at the Jackson Hole economic symposium.
Sensex and Nifty Market Closing Breakdown
At the closing bell, the 30-share BSE Sensex advanced by 330.92 points, or 0.43 percent, to settle at 77,264.51. Concurrently, the broader 50-share NSE Nifty gained 84.80 points, or 0.35 percent, ending the session at 24,175.65.
Market breadth favored advancers throughout the day across the National Stock Exchange. Approximately 2,300 equities registered gains to close in the green, while 1,840 stocks experienced selling pressure and closed in the red. A total of 183 equities remained unchanged, reflecting a selective buying pattern among market participants.
IT Sector Surge Powered by Global AI Demand
The IT index emerged as the star performer of Friday's trade, soaring nearly 3.5 percent. Robust financial results from Nvidia and expanding global capital expenditure toward AI infrastructure restored market confidence in technology service providers. Indian IT firms that offer enterprise digital transformation and AI integration services benefited directly from this global sentiment boost.
Heavyweight tech stocks dominated the list of top gainers on the Nifty 50. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) led the rally with a sharp gain of 4.16 percent. Tech Mahindra surged 3.53 percent, while Infosys climbed 2.99 percent. HCL Technologies and Wipro also secured substantial gains, rising 2.66 percent and 2.58 percent, respectively.
Sectoral Trends and Stock Performance
Beyond the technology space, sectoral trends presented a mixed picture. The Pharma, Metal, and Media indices each added roughly 0.4 percent, offering secondary support to the benchmarks. On the flip side, Consumer Durables and FMCG stocks encountered profit-taking, declining by around 0.4 percent each. Broader market indices showed resilience but limited momentum, as both the Midcap and Smallcap indices closed virtually flat.
The session's major laggards included prominent banking and consumer names. ICICI Bank emerged as the top loser on the Nifty 50, shedding 1.40 percent. Shriram Finance fell by 1.28 percent, followed by ITC, which declined 1.12 percent. UltraTech Cement lost 1.09 percent, while Asian Paints slipped 0.85 percent by the close of trade.
Investors Await US Fed Signals at Jackson Hole
Despite the IT-led resurgence, market participation remained cautious and focused on stock-specific opportunities. Traders and institutional investors are keenly tracking the upcoming address by the US Federal Reserve Chairman at the Jackson Hole symposium. The commentary regarding future interest rate trajectories is expected to provide key direction for global equity markets and dictate foreign institutional investment flows into emerging markets like India.
