Indian equity markets kicked off trading on August 19 on a muted note, with key benchmark indices opening in negative territory. The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 29.24 points in early session to trade at 77,196.22. Similarly, the broad-based NSE Nifty 50 index slipped 22.85 points to 24,132.05, pulling it dangerously close to its crucial technical support zone of 24,100. Early market weakness was primarily triggered by selling pressure across auto, metal, power, energy, and realty counters. However, selective buying interest in major information technology stocks prevented a steeper market drawdown.
Market Breadth and Investor Sentiment
Despite headline indices remaining under minor pressure, overall market breath stayed relatively balanced. According to initial trading figures, approximately 1,210 stocks advanced into green territory, whereas 1,135 stocks registered declines. Meanwhile, 154 stocks traded unchanged without any significant price variation. This market breadth pattern signals that the initial decline is not indicative of widespread panic selling, but rather highlights stock-specific rotational trading and sector-wise strategy realignments by investors.
IT and FMCG Sectors Support the Benchmark
Amid broader market headwinds, the technology and fast-moving consumer goods sectors offered vital support to the indices. Sectoral trends showed that the Nifty IT index spearheaded gains with a rise of +0.84%, followed by Nifty FMCG up +0.35% and Nifty Pharma increasing +0.16%.

Pressure Mounts on Auto, Metal, and Banking Shares
Conversely, profit-booking in several key segments kept market gains capped. The Nifty Energy index was the biggest drag, shedding -0.42%, while Nifty Realty lost -0.30%, Nifty Infra fell -0.28%, and Nifty Bank declined -0.19%.

Crude Oil Prices Continue Upward Momentum
Adding to global market dynamics, crude oil prices maintained their upward trajectory for the fourth consecutive trading session. International benchmark Brent crude advanced to nearly $91.56 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude rose to around $85.59 per barrel. This persistent surge in global oil prices continues to keep investor sentiment cautious in domestic equity markets.
