Indian equity benchmarks experienced a highly volatile session on Monday before closing almost unchanged from their previous levels. Throughout the trading day, indices oscillated between gains and losses as market participants weighed selective buying against profit-taking in heavyweights. The BSE Sensex edged up by a minor 43.27 points, or 0.06 percent, to end at 78,542.44. Similarly, the NSE Nifty 50 added just 13.15 points, or 0.05 percent, to settle at 24,583.80. Despite the muted closing in headline indices, active buying in midcap stocks helped sustain broader market sentiment.
Market Breadth and Key Stock Movers
Market breadth remained perfectly balanced across the broad market, highlighting mixed sentiment among investors. Approximately 2,103 stocks registered advances on the exchange, while 2,107 shares declined. A total of 184 equities closed unchanged, reflecting an equal tug-of-war between buyers and sellers throughout the session.
Among top corporate performers, Titan Company led the gainers' chart on the Nifty 50, advancing 3.14 percent to finish at ₹5,098.20. Consumer and financial counters also provided vital support to the headline index, with Tata Consumer gaining 2.4 percent and Bajaj Finance climbing 2.2 percent. Shriram Finance jumped 2.0 percent, while Grasim logged a 1.7 percent gain. Other notable gainers included Asian Paints, Tata Steel, Infosys, and Axis Bank, all closing in positive territory.
PSU Banks Under Pressure as Realty Outperforms
Conversely, selling pressure in public sector banking giants and heavyweights checked the market's upward movement. State Bank of India emerged as the biggest loser of the day, dropping 2.39 percent. Eternal also registered a decline of 1.57 percent, while consumer goods major ITC dropped 1.23 percent by the closing bell.
On a sectoral front, real estate equities led the day's rally, pushing the Nifty Realty index up by 1.3 percent. The Consumer Durables index posted a 0.4 percent gain, while the Private Bank index rose 0.5 percent. On the downside, public sector lenders faced heavy selling, dragging the Nifty PSU Bank index down by 1.6 percent. Additionally, the Oil & Gas index slipped 0.3 percent, and the Infrastructure index lost 0.4 percent, concluding a range-bound trading session.
