Technology services major Wipro has announced its financial performance for the second quarter of FY27, falling short of broad market expectations across profitability, revenue, and forward guidance. The Bengaluru-headquartered company recorded a 4.5% sequential decline and a 1.4% year-on-year drop in its consolidated net profit, which settled at Rs 3,200.6 crore for the July to September period. Following the earnings announcement and a cautious outlook for the upcoming quarter, the company's American Depository Receipts listed in the United States faced immediate selling pressure.
Topline Expands Annual Pace While Bottomline Contracts
Despite the squeeze on profitability, Wipro managed to sustain top-line expansion on an annualized basis. Consolidated revenue from operations for the quarter stood at Rs 24,752.7 crore, registering an increase of more than 9% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year and a modest rise of 1.1% over the preceding quarter. In comparison, the company had reported revenue of Rs 24,478.6 crore in the first quarter of FY27 and Rs 22,697.3 crore in the second quarter of FY26.
Net profit trends show a visible pullback from the preceding quarter. Wipro had delivered a consolidated net profit of Rs 3,352 crore in the first quarter of FY27, while the net profit in the second quarter of FY26 was recorded at Rs 3,246.2 crore. While operational volumes supported overall revenue growth, margin pressures and shifting deal profiles impacted the final bottom line.
Dollar Metrics and Sluggish Large Deal Momentum
In foreign currency terms, the IT services segment brought in revenue of $2,611.5 million during the second quarter. This represented a marginal sequential dip of 0.1%, though it marked an improvement of 0.3% over the prior year. Evaluated on a non-GAAP constant currency basis, IT services revenue remained completely flat quarter-on-quarter, while inching up by 0.6% on a year-on-year comparison.
Total deal wins witnessed a substantial slowdown during the period. Wipro closed total bookings worth $2,595 million, marking a steep 22.9% drop sequentially in constant currency terms. Within these bookings, large deal intake contracted sharply to $674 million, plunging by 58.6% quarter-on-quarter in constant currency. The sharp reduction in large deal closures highlights continuing hesitation among enterprise clients when committing to major transformational expenditures.
Strategic Priorities: Focus on Artificial Intelligence and Consulting
Addressing the quarterly performance, Wipro Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Srini Pallia emphasized the long-term potential of the firm's strategic pivot toward technology transformation. "The strategic investments we have been making are beginning to deliver results. They are enhancing our ability to win in new markets, add new clients, and grow existing relationships. At the same time, our consulting-led, AIpowered strategy is helping us create larger transformation opportunities," he said.
Pallia added that enterprise adoption of artificial intelligence will remain a pivotal structural driver for corporate spending. He pointed out that the company views AI as a multi-year catalyst capable of widening the total addressable market, citing measurable traction within the organization's dedicated AI-Native Unit and wider portfolio of intelligent solutions.
Margin Performance, Cash Generation, and Earnings per Share
On operational metrics, the operating margin for the IT services division stood at 16.5% for the quarter. This reflected a sequential expansion of 0.5%, although it contracted by 0.2% when measured against the same quarter of the previous year. Diluted earnings per share reached Rs 3.23 ($0.03), advancing 0.9% sequentially and 4.2% on an annualized basis.
The bright spot of the quarter remained working capital efficiency and liquidity generation. Operating cash flows surged to Rs 53.0 billion ($553.6 million), marking a substantial sequential jump of 61.3%. This robust cash generation represented 165.8% of the company's total net income for the quarter.
Highlighting this financial discipline, Chief Financial Officer Aparna Iyer remarked, "Our operating margin for the quarter was 16.5%, an expansion of 0.5% sequentially. We have delivered this improvement even while continuing to invest in our business and people. We remain relentless in driving cash flow conversion. Q2 is yet another quarter where our operating cash flow has been robust and stood at 166% of net income."
Muted Q3 Outlook and Market Valuation Dynamics
Investor sentiment took a hit largely due to management's muted projection for the upcoming December quarter. Wipro expects IT services segment revenue growth to fall between -1.5% at the lower boundary and 0.5% at the upper boundary. In absolute terms, this projection translates to revenue expectations between $2,571 million and $2,625 million for the third quarter of FY27, signaling that operational headwinds remain entrenched.
Reflecting the cautious outlook, Wipro's ADR slipped by nearly 3% during pre-market trading hours on the New York Stock Exchange. While it pared some losses once the regular trading session commenced, the instrument remained under pressure, trading lower by 1.14% at $1.7795.
In the domestic market, Wipro's equity shares had closed ahead of the earnings release with a gain of 1.6% at Rs 173.70 on the BSE, giving the company an aggregate market capitalization of Rs 1,72,055.81 crore. Domestic equity markets will formally price in the quarterly scorecard and the subdued guidance when trading resumes on Friday.
