The transit crisis has stretched into its third day, with the main impact concentrated at Jorabat, a strategic border point that serves as the principal gateway between Assam and Meghalaya. Local agitators on the Assam side have systematically intercepted Meghalaya-registered vehicles, turning them back and refusing passage toward Shillong. In order to keep the peace and prevent any further clashes or mob violence, police personnel and reserve security units have been stationed in large numbers throughout the sensitive border precinct.
Violent Incidents In Shillong Trigger Reaction
The roots of the standoff lie in a series of violent attacks that occurred in Shillong on August 19 during a black-flag rally organized by the Khasi Students' Union. During that event, unidentified individuals, some wearing face masks, targeted vehicles carrying tourists from Assam. The violent assault left multiple travelers injured and resulted in extensive structural damage to several vehicles, including shattered windshields and smashed side windows.

In retaliation for the Shillong attacks, transport unions and allied groups in Assam launched demonstrations at Jorabat, placing severe restrictions on vehicles attempting to enter Meghalaya.
