An escalation of targeted overnight violence has shaken multiple districts across Meghalaya, as unidentified perpetrators launched coordinated petrol bomb strikes and set fire to public infrastructure, administrative vehicles, and political premises across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region.
Violent Incidents Reported Across Shillong
In the state capital of Shillong, attackers targeted high-profile facilities during the early hours of Friday. Around 5:00 AM, a petrol bomb was hurled at the National People’s Party (NPP) office situated in the Lachumiere locality. While the building did not suffer severe structural harm and no injuries were sustained, security officers swiftly stepped in to fortify the area. Hours prior, at approximately 1:30 AM, miscreants threw a petrol bomb at the Madanrting police station, though no destruction was documented in that strike. However, property damage did occur in Malki Nongshilliang, where a parked motorcycle was set on fire and completely ruined.
Destruction of Government Infrastructure in West Khasi Hills
The wave of night-time attacks extended deep into West Khasi Hills, specifically targeting administrative assets in Nongstoin on Thursday night. Inside the Community and Rural Development (C&RD) Block campus, assailants set fire to an official Mahindra Maxx vehicle registered under ML 01 4130. Simultaneously, a Gypsy vehicle stationed at the Public Works Department (PWD) Sibsingh Syiem Inspection Bungalow was torched by arsonists. Shortly before midnight, around 11:30 PM, another petrol bomb exploded at the office premises of the Superintending Engineer of PWD Roads Western Circle. Officials confirmed that despite the severe provocation and property destruction, no human casualties were recorded in these strikes.
Targeted Attack in West Jaintia Hills and Heightened Alert
Disturbances were also recorded in West Jaintia Hills, where a government Mahindra Bolero carrying registration number ML 01 6416 was set ablaze at Mookynphad Mihmyntdu around 1:40 AM. Local residents noticed the flames and alerted authorities, prompting Fire and Emergency Services teams to rush to the location to douse the fire. The vehicle sustained heavy damage across its frontal section. These synchronized acts of sabotage occur against a backdrop of rising unrest across several districts, forcing law enforcement agencies to step up street patrolling and maintain round-the-clock vigilance to prevent further law and order breakdown.
