Literature enthusiasts in Meghalaya have a major cultural gathering on the horizon as the sixth edition of the Shillong Literary Festival 2026 gears up for its November run. Celebrated Booker Prize winners Kiran Desai and Damon Galgut are slated to headline the three-day gathering, which will take place between November 12 and November 14 at the picturesque Ward's Lake in Shillong.
The announcement of both internationally acclaimed novelists marks the opening headline act for the 2026 calendar, with organisers preparing to unveil additional authors, literary voices, and prominent thinkers over the coming weeks. The festival is curated to bring together diverse writers, readers, and intellectuals from across India as well as overseas on a common stage.
Literary Profiles of Kiran Desai and Damon Galgut
Kiran Desai secured the 2006 Booker Prize for her celebrated work The Inheritance of Loss, having earlier gained acclaim with her debut title Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard. Her writing is widely recognized for capturing the intricacies of human migration, individual identity, domestic life, and the frictions between personal journeys and larger societal structures. She returns to prominent literary discussions following the 2025 Booker Prize shortlist appearance of her latest novel, The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny.
South African author and playwright Damon Galgut, who claimed the 2021 Booker Prize for his novel The Promise, will join her at the venue. Having been shortlisted for the honor three times over his career, Galgut published his initial novel at just 17 years old. His body of work has drawn wide international recognition for its sharp narrative architecture, keen examinations of historical memory, family ties, and the lingering social scars left behind by apartheid.
First Bloom Contest for Emerging Writers
Leading up to the main event in November, a series of pre-festival literary initiatives and creative workshops will take place across the city. Central to this lead-up is an open call initiative titled First Bloom: Discovering New Writing from the Northeast, aimed directly at encouraging emerging talent working in fiction and narrative non-fiction.
Submissions for the writing call will officially close on October 20. The organizers have instituted an overall prize pool of Rs 75,000 for the selected entries, which allocates Rs 50,000 to the winning manuscript and Rs 25,000 to the chosen runner-up.
Specialized Masterclasses at State Convention Centre
Three distinct workshops are scheduled to roll out at the State Convention Centre in Shillong ahead of the lakefront festival. A focused session exploring professional opportunities across the publishing trade will be steered by Kanishka Gupta on October 26 at 10:30 am. The discussion plans to address manuscript editing, literary representation, marketing, and the evolving possibilities and hurdles introduced by artificial intelligence.
Later that afternoon, a dedicated creative writing workshop featuring authors Mitra Phukan and Lalnunsanga Ralte will get underway at 3 pm on October 26. The calendar concludes its workshop segment on November 11 with Ways of Visual Practice, an interactive photography session run by Menty Jamir, Indrajit Khambe, and Bipin Aspatwar, incorporating visual storytelling discussions, portfolio reviews, and field techniques.
Spotlight on Indigenous Narrative Traditions
Supported by the Tourism Department under the Government of Meghalaya, the festival will actively highlight the storytelling heritage and oral traditions of the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities, placing regional folklore and perspectives into dialogue with broader national and worldwide narratives.
