A fresh on-device desktop application titled Google AI Edge Foresight has arrived for Mac users, positioning itself as a direct alternative to existing software such as Granola. Developed by the same team that rolled out an offline-first AI dictation utility back in April, this new software aims to capture and organize conversation points across meetings without requiring an active internet connection.
On-Device Gemma Models and Offline Performance
The core functionality of the Mac software relies on local computing, powered by the EmbeddingGemma 2 model featuring 740 million parameters. This setup allows the tool to run entirely offline while gathering conversation summaries from both third-party conferencing apps and direct in-person discussions. According to technical details shared on the product's official FAQ section, the software is specifically optimized for Apple Silicon hardware. Consequently, professionals working in remote locations, flying on airplanes, or dealing with unstable internet connections can continue capturing, organizing, and reviewing their discussions without technical interruptions.
Dual-Pane Note-Taking and Custom Knowledge Bases
Functionally, the tool adopts a dual-screen workspace layout familiar to Granola users. One half of the display provides a manual workspace for typing shorthand notes, while the adjacent pane dynamically displays automated notes generated by the system. Users retain the ability to jot down thoughts by hand while the audio is being transcribed in real time. Beyond generating live transcripts, the software integrates an assistant backed by Gemma 4, allowing participants to chat directly with the tool and query details from the dialogue.
The application also enables users to construct a dedicated local knowledge repository by importing existing documents. Supported formats include PDFs, Google Docs, Microsoft Office files, Markdown text, plain text documents, and saved web bookmarks. Whenever discussions touch upon topics covered in these supplementary files, the system can leverage the stored materials alongside current notes to deliver real-time contextual answers.
Escalating Rivalry Across the Meeting Assistant Landscape
While the company's previous dictation software remained an experimental release that did not transition into mainstream adoption, the current tool may primarily function as a demonstration of what the Gemma family of local models can achieve. Even so, there remains potential for a broader consumer version down the line that taps into Gemini cloud models across video platforms.
The debut comes at a time when competition in the automated meeting space is accelerating. Several tech players have entered the arena recently: voice dictation provider Wispr and calendar platform Calendly both introduced their own meeting assistant tools over the past few months. In parallel, productivity startup Superhuman, previously known as Grammarly, finalized an acquisition of Y Combinator-backed assistant Fathom just last month.
