Addressing one of the most stubborn structural credit hurdles faced by India's micro and small enterprises, fintech platform Optimo Capital has raised Rs 150 crore ($17.5 million) in a fresh Series A equity round. The financing round was spearheaded by founder Prashant Pitti, alongside continued capital backing from early investors Blume Ventures and Omnivore. The proceeds are designated to expand collateral-backed lending solutions for small business owners who lack formal financial histories, a drawback that regularly locks them out of meaningful commercial loans offered by traditional retail banks and non-banking financial companies.
Tackling the Credit Deficit With Tangible Asset Collateral
A substantial segment of India's entrepreneurial base holds valuable real estate assets, such as small commercial shops or residential homes, which frequently sit unmonetised during capital crunches. Because formal financial institutions demand exhaustive credit scores and paperwork that micro-enterprises rarely possess, business owners often find themselves forced to rely on high-interest unsecured borrowing. Optimo resolves this liquidity bottleneck by allowing small merchants to pledge these idle physical properties as collateral, unlocking access to significantly larger funding pools at substantially lower borrowing rates than unsecured retail credit options.
Slashing Processing Delays Through 77 Lakh Digital Land Records and AI
Conventional physical loan procedures tied to real estate typically stretch between four to six weeks because of tedious on-ground title verifications, legal clearances, and physical inspections. Optimo eliminates this operational friction by drawing on a database of 77 lakh digital land records integrated with specialised artificial intelligence engines. This automated mechanism conducts title cross-checks and asset valuations in a fraction of the standard timeframe, enabling the platform to issue in-principle loan approvals within hours and complete end-to-end capital disbursements in under a week, saving vital operating time for cash-dependent merchants.
Building a Rs 350 Crore Portfolio and Reaching 56 Southern and Central Cities
Over a span of just 18 months since launching commercial activities, the lending venture has amassed an active loan portfolio valued at Rs 350 crore. Backed by a workforce of 480 professionals, the company's regional footprint extends across 56 cities spread over Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Underscoring its operational model, the firm achieved operational profitability within the first three months of starting operations and has sustained profitable financial status for more than 15 consecutive months.
"Optimo is unlocking India's biggest asset (53% of nation's wealth), its land & property, by allowing property-owners to quickly get secured-loans."
Highlighting the macro landscape, Founder and Managing Director Prashant Pitti noted that India's mortgage-to-GDP ratio currently stands at merely 9 percent, contrasting sharply with developed markets where the ratio routinely exceeds 50 percent. He emphasised that the nation is failing to deploy its single largest reserve of wealth to accelerate aggregate domestic economic growth.
Securing Rs 110 Crore in Institutional Debt to Penetrate Tier-3 Markets
In parallel to the equity funding, Optimo has mobilised Rs 110 crore in institutional credit lines from IDFC and Axis Bank. A pipeline of public sector undertakings and leading NBFCs is slated to join the platform as capital providers and co-lending partners in the upcoming period. The newly secured balance sheet capital will fund deeper investments in technological infrastructure, fine-tune algorithmic underwriting models, expand co-lending relationships, and drive physical expansion into Tier-3 markets to chip away at the country's $530 billion unserved small business credit gap.
