The Department of Posts is operating several financial savings schemes designed to help small earners and salaried individuals secure their financial future. Among these offerings, the Gram Suraksha Yojana, available under the Rural Postal Life Insurance portfolio, has emerged as an attractive long-term investment tool. By setting aside a modest amount of just 50 Rupees daily, investors can accumulate a substantial maturity benefit of up to nearly 35 Lakh Rupees. This government-backed scheme provides a disciplined path toward wealth creation while combining life coverage with guaranteed returns.
Key Features and Eligibility Criteria of Gram Suraksha Yojana
First introduced in the year 1995, the Gram Suraksha Yojana is open to any individual between 19 and 55 years of age. Providing details about the scheme, Gaurav Gautam, Assistant Superintendent of Posts at the Firozabad Postal Division, explained that policyholders can select a sum assured ranging from a minimum of 10,000 Rupees to a maximum of 10 Lakh Rupees. To make the scheme accessible, the Postal Department allows flexible premium payment modes including monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual options. Additionally, a grace period of 30 days is provided for paying premiums in case of any temporary delay.
Accumulating 35 Lakh Rupees Through Daily Savings of 50 Rupees
The calculation structure of the Gram Suraksha Yojana is straightforward and rewarding. A daily saving of 50 Rupees translates to an approximate monthly contribution of 1,500 Rupees. Over time, this small regular contribution grows into an impressive corpus reaching up to 35 Lakh Rupees. The exact monthly premium payable depends on the entry age of the investor and the chosen maturity age. For instance, if a 19-year-old individual purchases a policy with a sum assured of 10 Lakh Rupees, the monthly premium varies based on whether the maturity target is set at 55, 58, or 60 years of age.
Breakdown of Premiums and Maturity Benefits by Age Options
For a 19-year-old subscriber opting for a 10 Lakh Rupees sum assured, the scheme outlines three distinct maturity categories
- Maturity at 55 Years: The monthly premium requirement is 1,515 Rupees. Upon completing this term, the policyholder receives a maturity benefit of 31.60 Lakh Rupees.
- Maturity at 58 Years: The monthly premium reduces slightly to 1,463 Rupees, yielding a higher maturity payout of 33.40 Lakh Rupees.
- Maturity at 60 Years: The monthly premium drops to 1,411 Rupees, offering an ultimate maturity return of 34.60 Lakh Rupees.
Under the guidelines of the policy, the accumulated sum assured along with accrued bonuses is disbursed to the subscriber upon attaining 80 years of age. In the event of the policyholder's passing before reaching this age, the entire benefit is transferred to the designated nominee or legal heir.
Loan Facility and Surrender Terms
Gram Suraksha Yojana offers valuable liquidity options to support investors during unexpected financial requirements. Policyholders become eligible to apply for a loan against their policy after completing four years of continuous investment. Furthermore, if an investor wishes to exit the plan early, the policy can be surrendered after three years. Although originally designed with rural populations in mind, the Postal Department now extends the benefits of Gram Suraksha Yojana to both rural and urban residents across the country.
