The state-wise performance of the Indian auto industry for the first quarter of FY2027 (April to June) reflects varied purchasing preferences and regional economic dynamics. According to figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Maharashtra captured the top position in passenger vehicle sales, while Uttar Pradesh emerged as the leading market for two-wheelers. Across the nation, total passenger vehicle sales touched 12.74 lakh units during this three-month period, driven largely by demand in the western region.
Passenger Vehicle Sales: Maharashtra Leads Nationwide Registrations
In the passenger vehicle segment, overall sales across India reached 12.74 lakh units during the April-June quarter. The western region spearheaded regional volume, contributing 3.9 lakh units to the total tally. State-by-state data shows Maharashtra taking the top spot with 1,47,440 units sold. Uttar Pradesh secured the second rank with 1,35,329 units, followed by Gujarat with 98,855 units, Karnataka with 98,315 units, and Tamil Nadu with 96,327 units. These registration numbers underscore strong consumer demand for personal cars across western and southern markets.
Two-Wheeler Market: Uttar Pradesh Tops Sales Charts
The two-wheeler market recorded total sales of 56.29 lakh units across the country during Q1 FY27. Uttar Pradesh demonstrated overwhelming dominance in this category by recording 8,82,047 unit sales to secure the first position. Maharashtra followed in second place with 5,61,738 units. Tamil Nadu registered sales of 4,80,653 units, while Karnataka and Bihar recorded 3,74,221 units and 3,69,302 units respectively. From a regional perspective, the western region delivered the highest share with 16.61 lakh units, reflecting high commuter demand across semi-urban and rural centers.
Three-Wheeler Segment: Southern Region Leads as Uttar Pradesh Ranks First
Nationwide sales of three-wheelers stood at 2.14 lakh units for the first quarter of FY2027. On a zonal level, the southern region registered the highest sales volume at 71,000 units. Among individual states, Uttar Pradesh led the rankings with 25,669 units sold. Gujarat took the second spot with 20,534 units, followed by Karnataka with 19,192 units, Bihar with 15,653 units, and Assam with 15,223 units. These figures illustrate the critical role of three-wheelers in facilitating last-mile transport and local passenger mobility.
Commercial Vehicles: Maharashtra Dominates Freight and Cargo Demand
In the commercial vehicle segment, overall nationwide sales stood at 2.65 lakh units. The western region maintained regional leadership by generating 91,000 units of this total. Maharashtra topped the state rankings with 36,433 units sold, ahead of Tamil Nadu which recorded 24,743 units. Karnataka registered 21,830 units, Gujarat accounted for 21,778 units, and Uttar Pradesh rounded out the top five with 21,161 units. Commercial vehicle registration patterns highlight key hubs of industrial movement and infrastructure expansion across major Indian states.
