Government data reveals that US airlines spent a total of USD 6.66 billion on jet fuel during the month of May. This marks the second consecutive month that fuel expenses have remained above the USD 6 billion mark. According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the total for May represents an 84 per cent increase compared to May 2025. Because fuel consistently ranks among the most significant operating expenses for any airline, company finances are acutely sensitive to shifts in global energy prices and supply chain reliability.
Analyzing Price Pressure vs. Consumption
In May, US carriers paid an average of USD 4.09 per gallon for their fuel supply. While this figure represents a marginal decrease from the USD 4.11 reported in April, it remains significantly higher—by 85 per cent—than the USD 2.21 price point seen in May 2025. These figures demonstrate that the burden of higher spending is driven almost entirely by market pricing pressure rather than a surge in usage. In fact, total consumption by US carriers in May reached 1.627 billion gallons, a 0.6 per cent decrease compared to May 2025. Similarly, data for April indicated that fuel consumption was slightly lower than the year-earlier period, suggesting that flight schedules and passenger demand have remained stable overall.
Middle East Conflict and Market Volatility
The current energy market dynamics reflect a broader surge in costs following the onset of conflict in the Middle East earlier this year. Disruptions to shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global crude and refined fuel supplies, have had a direct impact on aviation fuel prices. Although costs eased slightly from their spring peaks following an interim ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran, the stability of this truce remains in question. Notably, the British military reported that three tankers were struck by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. Further complicating the supply chain, the US revoked a license that had previously allowed for Iranian oil sales, adding layers of uncertainty to the energy market.
