In Odisha's Balasore district, a routine fishing trip in the Subarnarekha river turned into a terrifying experience when a fisherman discovered a massive python trapped in his net instead of fish. A rescue team from the Raibania Forest Department responded swiftly, successfully rescuing the reptile, conducting a health assessment, and returning it safely to the wild.
Unexpected Catch Following Subarnarekha Floodwaters
The incident occurred in the Berhampur area of Makadia panchayat, located within Olamara village in the Jaleswar block of Balasore district. Following recent flooding in the Subarnarekha river, excess water had been released into the region, leading many local residents to venture toward the riverbanks to catch fish. One local fisherman deployed his net into the flowing waters expecting a routine catch. However, upon pulling the net back, he was startled to find a giant python firmly entangled inside the mesh. Overcome with fear, the fisherman quickly alerted local authorities and fellow villagers about the dangerous situation.
Swift Response by Forest Officials and Rising Crowd
Upon receiving the emergency information, a specialized team from the Raibania Forest Department arrived at the scene without delay. Demonstrating commendable caution and skill, the forest staff carefully handled the trapped snake and disentangled it from the nylon mesh without causing any injury to the animal or posing a risk to bystanders. As news of the giant snake spread throughout the surrounding rural pockets, hundreds of curious local residents rushed to the riverbank to catch a glimpse of the impressive reptile, creating a massive crowd in the area.
Medical Checkup and Release into Ahampada Forest
Once the python was safely secured, forest personnel transported the reptile to a nearby veterinary hospital for a thorough physical evaluation. Officials confirmed that the rescued python weighed approximately 15 kilograms and measured around 5 meters in length. After veterinary doctors inspected the reptile and declared it healthy and free of injuries, forest officials decided to return it to its natural habitat. The python was subsequently taken to the nearby Ahampada forest area and released deep into the wilderness.
