A large group of Pakistani brides has finally reached India, overcoming a prolonged period of uncertainty caused by strict border and visa restrictions following major security operations. Their wedding ceremonies had remained stalled for a considerable time because cross-border travel routes were completely shut down. Through coordinated efforts and alternative international routes, these young women have now arrived to join their families and complete their matrimonial unions.
Traditional Border Crossings Closed Due to Security Measures
For years, families from Sindh routinely utilized the Wagha-Attari border for travel, making it convenient to arrange marriages between communities across the border. This established pattern changed abruptly when stricter protocols were enforced, bringing overland travel and visa processing to a halt. Consequently, roughly 150 brides who were already engaged to men living in India found themselves stranded in Pakistan, unable to travel to their new homes.
Traveling Through Third Countries to Reach Families
A community representative based in Nagpur, Rajesh Jhambia, explained that concerted efforts finally yielded results when authorities cleared visas for the brides and their relatives for wedding purposes. Rather than using the land border, the brides journeyed through Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, and other nations, entering India via international flights. These arrivals have enabled long-awaited ceremonies in cities such as Nagpur, Raipur, Jodhpur, and Pune.
When land routes were closed, affected families reached out to Sant Yudhishthirlal Shadani in Raipur, the spiritual head of the revered Shadani दरबार located in Ghotki, Sindh. The religious institution compiled a comprehensive roster of engaged women whose weddings were pending across various Indian cities. This compilation was submitted to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to request formal clearance.
Strict Conditions and Future Pending Visas
Approval was granted with the specific stipulation that travelers from across the border must use air routes exclusively. According to community figures, 150 brides and their family members have traveled through alternative aviation hubs since April of this year, which includes 15 specific cases in Nagpur. At the same time, organizers note that approximately 300 more young women are still waiting in Pakistan, and requests have been forwarded to secure clearance for them as well.
The underlying travel restrictions originated in the aftermath of a major terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the loss of 26 Indian lives. In response to that security crisis, sweeping measures were implemented, including the suspension of standard visa pathways and the closure of border transit points, which directly affected cross-border family arrangements.
