Tragedy has struck the prohibition-bound state of Gujarat as two individuals lost their lives and 19 others were hospitalized after consuming suspected adulterated liquor in the Bhavnagar district. The illegal liquor consumption has triggered a major law enforcement crackdown across the region, resulting in the detention of four bootleggers linked to an interstate smuggling network.
Outbreak of Illness in Kharakadi Village
The tragic incident unfolded when a group of residents in Kharakadi village consumed liquor from counterfeit bottles of a prominent Indian Made Foreign Liquor brand. Shortly after drinking the toxic alcohol, several individuals experienced severe health complications. Among those affected, Upendrasinh Gohil, a resident of Kharakadi village, was rushed to Sir T Hospital in critical condition but unfortunately succumbed during treatment. Another victim passed away under suspicious circumstances at the same medical facility, prompting administrative authorities to investigate the exact cause of death.
As the illness spread rapidly among the consumers, emergency medical teams scrambled to provide urgent care. Currently, 19 individuals remain admitted across Sir T Hospital and two to three other healthcare centers in Bhavnagar city. Medical personnel are actively monitoring the hospitalized victims, most of whom displayed acute symptoms following the consumption of the fake liquor bottles.
Interstate Supply Chain Traced to Madhya Pradesh
Providing details on the administrative response, District Collector Manish Kumar confirmed that the fatalities and hospitalizations occurred due to the consumption of adulterated alcohol filled into fake bottles of a known liquor brand. Neelambag Police Station Inspector DP Udankat noted that police officers are working closely with medical experts to verify the precise medical factors leading to the second death at Sir T Hospital.
Preliminary investigative findings conducted by the local law enforcement agencies revealed that the counterfeit alcohol bottles were illegally transported into Gujarat from neighboring Madhya Pradesh. Superintendent of Police Nitesh Pandey highlighted that investigators are now focusing on identifying the exact manufacturing sources in Madhya Pradesh, the logistics behind their transit, and the key handlers who authorized the delivery into Bhavnagar.
Police Crackdown and Bootlegger Detentions
Following detailed interrogations of suspected individuals, the district police established dedicated operational teams to dismantle the bootlegging network. Utilizing a combination of technical surveillance and human intelligence, police teams conducted coordinated raids across Vartej and several other police station jurisdictions within Bhavnagar. These targeted operations led to the detention of four bootleggers directly associated with the supply chain of the fake liquor brand.
Superintendent of Police Nitesh Pandey stated that law enforcement officers succeeded in seizing a substantial quantity of counterfeit bottles belonging to the same brand during the raids. Legal proceedings against the detained suspects are currently underway. Meanwhile, police units continue extensive search operations across the district to apprehend remaining smugglers involved in the distribution of adulterated alcohol within the dry state.
