In a major push to make the electoral registration process transparent and hassle-free, the Election Commission of India has introduced citizen-friendly measures. Ordinary citizens no longer need to run around government offices just to keep their names active on the voter list. The commission has mandated that booth level officers will personally visit the residences of voters who have received notices to gather all necessary paperwork. This initiative comes as a massive relief for individuals whose names frequently got stuck due to technical discrepancies.
Home Collection And Digital Uploads Of Documents
Under the special intensive revision drive, voters who have been flagged as unmapped or have received notices regarding logical errors are no longer required to visit the electoral registration officer's office. Instead, the BLO will visit the voter's home directly, collect the required documents, and upload them onto the official ECI Net portal. Physical hearings will be held only in rare instances and will primarily be conducted through online channels. Furthermore, voters can authorize any adult family member to represent them during hearings if needed. Special help desks and camps are also being set up near night shelters and areas populated by homeless individuals and daily wage workers to ensure everyone retains their voting rights.
Extended Deadlines For Delhi And Maharashtra Voters
The commission has extended the deadlines for voter list updates in two major states. In Delhi, the final date to file claims and objections has been fixed at October 30, 2026, with the disposal of applications scheduled until November 30, 2026. In Maharashtra, the deadline has been extended to October 12, 2026, and cases will be resolved by November 10, 2026. Revision work has already concluded across 20 states, including Bihar and West Bengal. A special drive is actively running for left-out youths and new voters, while in Goa, 81 out of 97 excluded electors have already filled out Form 6.
Supreme Court Validation And System Upgrades
The entire revision mechanism has received strong judicial backing. In its order dated May 27, 2026, the Supreme Court fully validated the revision procedure along with the declarations in Form 6. To fortify the security and technological framework of the ECI Net system, a specialized committee comprising senior deputy election commissioners and IIT experts has been formed. The commission also clarified that a communication sent to the cabinet secretary was not tied to any policy dispute, but solely concerned the performance of a deputation officer. Additionally, stricter internal regulations have been enforced regarding meetings, foreign tours of officials, and evaluation protocols.
