Strong winds and heavy downpours triggered by Cyclone Arnab have severely impacted agricultural fields across Mirzapur district. Farming communities are dealing with widespread crop damage, with paddy sustaining the most extensive destruction. In addition to paddy, standing acreage of bajra and maize also suffered intense battering from the storm, flattening plants across numerous villages. Water accumulation in low-lying fields has submerged fallen stalks, triggering widespread concerns over steep drops in harvest yields.
Severe Threat to Grain Quality and Market Value
Detailing the extent of agrarian devastation across the region, Mirzapur Deputy Director of Agriculture Vikesh Singh Patel stated that roughly 30 to 40 percent of the district's paddy crop has been ruined by Cyclone Arnab. Ears of grain that collapsed into waterlogged fields run the risk of turning black due to sustained moisture exposure. This deterioration threatens to spoil grain quality and cause heavy breakage during milling. Consequently, growers could face severe resistance and financial losses when attempting to sell discolored or damaged produce in competitive agricultural markets.
Application Procedure for Uninsured Cultivators
Cultivators who did not secure insurance coverage for their current seasonal crops are not entirely excluded from financial recovery. Authorities have established a formal process allowing uninsured farmers to seek state compensation for storm-induced losses. To initiate a claim, affected farmers must draft a written representation outlining their land records, crop varieties, and the exact nature of the destruction sustained. This application must be delivered directly to the revenue office at their local tehsil.
Deputy Director Patel highlighted that uninsured cultivators must observe a strict deadline, lodging their formal written complaint within 48 hours of the damage occurring. Upon logging the petition, revenue department personnel will carry out on-ground field surveys to inspect the standing crop and verify losses. This survey documentation will then be forwarded to the state administration, paving the way for the disbursement of financial relief to qualified applicants.
Guidelines and Helpline for Insured Farmers
Farmers who hold active crop insurance policies can navigate a different, specialized reporting channel. Insured growers are advised to dial the dedicated helpline number 14447 to register formal intimation of storm losses. For insured policyholders, complaints must be submitted within 72 hours of the damaging event.
Following telephone registration, joint inspection squads comprising agriculture department officials and insurance company surveyors will visit affected farm holdings. The team will inspect the inundated plots, assess the percentage of crop destruction, and prepare formal inspection documentation. Growers who experienced heavy crop destruction are encouraged to coordinate closely with local revenue and agricultural officers to facilitate timely surveys, ensuring all eligible claims reach final sanction under government relief protocols.
