Cyclone Arnab Threat Looms Over Bay of Bengal as IMD Issues Severe Rain Alert for Coastal States

A developing depression over the Bay of Bengal threatens to intensify into Cyclone Arnab. Forecasters warn of heavy rainfall, potential flooding, and rough seas across Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana through September 27.

A powerful weather disturbance brewing over the ocean is steadily gathering strength and could soon escalate into a full-scale cyclonic storm named Arnab. Atmospheric scientists indicate that should this vortex reach peak cyclonic intensity, it would mark the opening cyclone of the year. The developing system is already reshaping weather patterns across several eastern and central states.

Current Coordinates and Trajectory of the Storm

The India Meteorological Department noted in an official update on Monday morning that the depression settled over west-central and adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal is poised to intensify into a deep depression shortly. During the preceding six hours, the weather system maintained a westward trajectory at a speed of 18 kmph. Ground tracking at 8:30 AM on September 22, 2026, pinpointed its center near latitude 17.9 degrees North and longitude 86.0 degrees East.

Regarding coastal proximity, the center lies roughly 200 kilometers south-east of Gopalpur in Odisha, 200 kilometers east-south-east of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 210 kilometers south of Puri, and about 290 kilometers east of Visakhapatnam. Private forecaster Skymet also projected that the depression will transition into a deep depression by Wednesday.

Projected Landfall and Severe Weather Projections

Meteorologists estimate that the weather system could strike the coast on September 23. If full cyclonization takes place, northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha are projected to endure the brunt of the coastal impact. Inclement conditions could also stretch into coastal West Bengal. As atmospheric pressure tightens within the vortex, intense cloud cover will blanket the shoreline, triggering extremely heavy downpours across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Telangana.

The danger window is expected to linger well after landfall. Between landfall and September 27, persistent and severe deluges could spark localized flooding and waterlogging across Telangana, southern districts of Odisha, and northern coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Rainfall Footprint Across Central and Eastern India

The pull of moisture from this marine disturbance has already activated widespread precipitation inland. Rain activity picked up across parts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh starting Monday. Heavy spells are also anticipated over eastern Madhya Pradesh, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Bihar. Water accumulation and flood-like emergencies remain a distinct possibility in vulnerable low-lying districts.

Precautionary Measures in Odisha

Authorities in Odisha have ramped up precautionary alerts across critical administrative belts. Earlier on September 18, the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar signaled that the low-pressure pocket would steadily concentrate and steer toward southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh. Heavy showers began lashing southern Odisha on September 22, with several administrative divisions bracing for intense to exceptionally heavy precipitation lasting through September 25.

Preparations must have started on the coasts of Odisha and Andhra, but isn't there a bigger risk of severe damage to crops and local markets in the interior regions?

Arjun Mehta@arjun-mehta·just now

Spot on, Ravikash. During the last big storm, a relative of mine lost his entire paddy crop, and inland markets took a severe hit too.

The next few days are going to be really tough for the coastal areas of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. According to the weather department, the threat won't subside even after landfall until September 27th. I wonder what solid security arrangements the administration has made.

Karan, disaster prep is fine, but I honestly doubt eastern UP will see much impact beyond a mild breeze, despite what the forecast says.
