Revered as the fifth Kedar among the sacred Panch Kedars, the holy shrine saw substantial quantities of rock, mud, and debris tumble down into its courtyard during the late hours of the night. The violent downhill flow of earth damaged nearby infrastructure around the temple grounds, causing widespread alarm among local villagers and visiting devotees.
Local Residents Mobilize to Clear Shrine Premises
The late-night slope failure sent large boulders and heavy sludge sliding down from the hilltop directly into the primary complex of the Kalpeshwar Mahadev Shrine. As soon as news of the disaster spread, residents living in nearby villages rushed to the temple site. Working collectively, the local community immediately began removing the accumulation of mud and stones to clear the pathways and restore order to the sacred precinct.
Continuous downpours across the mountainous stretches of Chamoli district have led to multiple instances of landslips and erosion in elevated areas. The entrance of debris into the temple courtyard has heightened anxiety among locals and pilgrims. Consequently, residents have appealed to the administration for an urgent technical inspection of both the shrine premises and the surrounding hillside. They are demanding immediate protective measures and permanent structural barriers to safeguard the temple and visitors from potential future rockfalls.
Context of Ongoing Disasters: Hydroelectric Tunnel Incident
This incident at the Kalpeshwar Mahadev Shrine follows another serious disaster in Chamoli district that occurred recently on Thursday. A massive landslide hit an under-construction hydroelectric tunnel, causing a rapid inundation of water, mud, and debris into the subterranean shaft. The catastrophic flooding trapped workers inside and claimed the lives of eight laborers. Following the incident, a massive rescue response was launched involving more than 200 personnel from the Indian Army, NDRF (utilizing specialized K9 dog units), SDRF, CISF, ITBP, and local police, who successfully rescued several workers from the site.
Search Operation Continues for Two Missing Tunnel Workers
Rescue operations remained active on Tuesday as multi-agency search teams continued searching for two workers who remain missing inside the hydro project tunnel. According to updates from SDRF officials, search teams are pushing forward despite severe mud deposits and extremely challenging conditions inside the underground passage. All responding disaster response agencies are operating in tight coordination while strictly adhering to safety standards.
High-capacity machinery is being used to continuously pump out standing water from the tunnel to enable deeper access. Emergency workers are systematically searching every potential location inside the structure using specialized recovery tools. Out of five JCB excavators that were buried inside the flooded shaft during the initial collapse, salvage crews have successfully extracted three machines. The recovery of these heavy vehicles has significantly accelerated the clearing of sludge and boosted the ongoing search for the missing workers.
