Severe flooding across Assam has disrupted countless lives, touching not just local residents but also prominent television personalities connected to the region. Popular actress Devoleena Bhattacharjee is deeply distressed by the unfolding humanitarian crisis in her home state. During a recent interactive social media session, she addressed the mounting tragedy and detailed how conditions continue to deteriorate by the day, eventually breaking down in tears as she spoke about her family's plight.
Going live on Facebook, the actress admitted that she had wanted to speak out about the situation for days but struggled to gather the courage. She shared with viewers that her mother remains trapped in the flood-hit Nazira area, while the homes belonging to her grandmother and aunt have been completely submerged and destroyed. Overcome with emotion, she confessed that she knew beforehand she would not be able to keep her composure while discussing the catastrophe.
For the television star, districts like Sivasagar and Nazira hold profound personal memories rather than just being geographical locations. She was born there and completed her entire schooling and college education in the area. Naturally, her primary anxiety revolves around the safety of her mother, who is still stationed in Nazira. On a slightly relieved note, she mentioned that due to divine grace, their older ancestral house has managed to escape total inundation.
Describing the extent of the devastation, she noted that other family members have suffered catastrophic losses. With a heavy heart, she remarked that everything has been wiped out in her grandmother and aunt's household, leaving nothing behind of what once existed. Expressing her helplessness, she explained her desire to travel to the state immediately, which is restricted due to her maternal responsibilities. She stated that if she did not have a young child to care for, she would have flown down instantly, but due to these duties, she is coordinating assistance from Mumbai instead.
The aftermath of the deluge poses severe secondary threats, a point she underscored with considerable worry. She pointed out that countless animals alongside human beings have perished or suffered, creating ideal conditions for waterborne infections and the potential outbreak of an epidemic. To aid relief efforts, she posted a picture on her Instagram story featuring a truck loaded with relief supplies destined for the affected zones, while urging the public to step forward and contribute generously according to their capacity.
Meanwhile, the macro situation on the ground in Assam remains grim. According to PTI, the state administration disbursed roughly 160 crore rupees on Monday as the initial interim relief package aimed at more than 75,000 families bearing the brunt of this year's monsoon fury. Households that sustained the most severe damage are receiving financial assistance amounting to 15,000 rupees each.
