A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Chitrakoot district when heavy rain caused the wall of a house to collapse late at night, claiming the lives of a father and his two young children in Barachh village under the Bharatkup police station area. The man's wife and another young daughter sustained serious injuries in the incident. The disaster struck around 12:00 AM on Wednesday night while all five family members were asleep inside their home after dinner. Continuous torrential downpours across the region have disrupted normal life, and this tragic event has plunged the entire village into mourning.
Sudden Wall Collapse Traps Family Sleeping Inside
Persistent monsoon rains over recent days have wreaked havoc across Chitrakoot district, causing local rivers and streams to overflow while submerging roads and severing connectivity to several rural areas. In Barachh village, local resident Kallu Yadav was sleeping inside his home along with his wife Kunta Devi, their son Ansh, and their two daughters Kalli and Anshika. As heavy rain pounded the area outside, a main wall of the structure suddenly gave way around 12:00 AM. The heavy debris fell directly onto the sleeping family members, trapping all five of them beneath the rubble.
The loud crash alerted neighbors, who immediately rushed to the site to initiate rescue efforts. Local residents worked tirelessly to move the heavy debris using whatever tools were available. Villagers promptly notified the local police and district administration. However, floodwaters overflowing from nearby drains had inundated access roads, cutting off normal travel and making it extremely challenging for emergency teams to reach the location quickly.
NDRF Deployment and Rescue Operations
Because the flooded roads isolated Barachh village from the tehsil headquarters, the district administration dispatched a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to handle the situation. Working alongside villagers, NDRF personnel managed to pull the trapped individuals out from under the collapsed wall. Unfortunately, despite their rapid efforts, three members of the family had already succumbed to their injuries.
Kallu Yadav, along with his son Ansh and daughter Kalli, died at the scene under the weight of the debris. Kunta Devi and her daughter Anshika were extracted alive but were suffering from severe injuries. Emergency workers arranged for the injured mother and child to be rushed to a healthcare facility for immediate medical treatment.
Grieving Survivor Recounts the Devastating Moment
Recounting the horrifying ordeal, Kunta Devi stated that all five family members were sleeping soundly inside when the wall suddenly caved in. She explained that as the wall collapsed, they attempted to run outside to safety, but the debris crushed her husband and children before they could escape. Distressed by the loss, she shared that her entire family has been shattered, leaving her with no surviving support system other than her injured young daughter.
Kunta Devi added that both she and her late husband worked as daily wage construction laborers to earn a living. Seeing her husband and two children lose their lives before her eyes was traumatic. After the incident, she managed to run into the village shouting for help, prompting neighbors to gather at her home. She expressed immense grief over losing her primary support system and livelihood overnight.
Administrative Assistance Assured and Compensation Demanded
Providing details on the incident, Sadar SDM Ajay Yadav confirmed that water runoff from nearby hills following heavy rains caused the wall to collapse. He noted that five people were trapped beneath the rubble, resulting in the deaths of the father, son, and daughter, while the mother and another daughter received injuries. The SDM assured that financial assistance under the divine disaster relief fund would be provided to the surviving family members promptly.
Meanwhile, Sadar MLA Anil Pradhan expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it extremely heartbreaking. He pointed out that incessant rainfall has inundated vast areas across the district with water. MLA Anil Pradhan urged the Chief Minister to grant comprehensive financial aid to the devastated family. As three funeral pyres were prepared from a single household in Barachh village, a somber mood gripped the entire community.
