Kayalvizhi Alagiri, the granddaughter of Tamil Nadu's former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, was detained and formally arrested by the Chennai Police following allegations of assaulting a State Bank of India branch manager. She was summoned to the Shastri Nagar police station, where officers questioned her for nearly two hours before recording her arrest. Because the charges against her carry a maximum sentence of less than three years, statutory provisions permitted her release on bail directly from the station shortly afterward.
Elevator Maintenance Dispute Led to Conflict
The incident stems from an ongoing maintenance issue at a commercial building located in Adyar, Chennai, which houses the State Bank of India's NRI branch. The property is owned by Kayalvizhi Alagiri, who is also the daughter of former Union Minister MK Alagiri. According to case details, the elevator servicing the branch had been out of order for an extended period, creating significant daily operational difficulties for staff and visiting customers.
Branch Manager Harshin Singh had repeatedly submitted complaints to the maintenance team managing the building premises. When these initial efforts yielded no resolution, Harshin Singh escalated the matter directly to property owner Kayalvizhi Alagiri to demand immediate repair work.
Heated Argument and Alleged Physical Assault
Following the complaint, Kayalvizhi Alagiri arrived at the bank's NRI branch on 20 July. A fiery altercation soon erupted between her and Branch Manager Harshin Singh regarding the broken lift and property management responsibilities. The discussion quickly degenerated into a severe verbal clash inside the bank premises.
During the confrontation, Kayalvizhi Alagiri reportedly used abusive language and issued threats against the branch official before slapping him across the face in anger. The entire confrontation was captured by security cameras installed inside the bank branch. The resulting CCTV footage subsequently circulated widely on social media platforms, drawing public scrutiny and heightening official attention around the incident.
Formal Complaint Filed by Senior Bank Official
Following the altercation, Namasivayam, Chief Manager at the State Bank of India's Regional Business Office (II), lodged a formal written complaint with the local police. Based on Namasivayam's report, the Adyar police station registered an official First Information Report (FIR) against Kayalvizhi Alagiri under relevant statutory sections and initiated a formal investigation.
Interrogation, Station Bail, and Conditional Release
As part of the ongoing inquiry, police served a legal summons under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), requiring Kayalvizhi Alagiri to appear before the investigating officer on 28 July. She reported to the Shastri Nagar police station, where authorities conducted a two-hour questioning session prior to executing her formal arrest.
Under governing legal frameworks, offenses carrying maximum prison terms of under three years qualify for bail at the police station level. Consequently, officers granted her immediate station bail upon completion of mandatory procedures. However, police imposed strict conditions: she must fully cooperate with investigators and provide prior notification to law enforcement before traveling out of the city. Investigators are continuing their examination of the CCTV recordings and related physical evidence to determine subsequent legal steps.
