A shocking instance of severe medical negligence has come to light at the District Hospital in Beed, Maharashtra, where surgical items were left inside the abdomen of a 19-year-old woman during a C-section delivery. The patient, identified as Sandhya Suraj Gaikwad, is currently in critical condition and battling for survival after foreign objects caused serious internal complications following her childbirth procedure.
Severe Complications Following Hospital Discharge
Sandhya underwent C-section surgery at the Beed District Hospital on August 1. Following the delivery, she was kept under observation for four days before being discharged by the medical staff. However, shortly after returning home, she began experiencing excruciating and persistent abdominal pain. As the severity of the pain intensified, her family rushed her to a private medical facility for urgent evaluation.
At the private hospital, attending physicians performed diagnostic scans to determine the root cause of her discomfort. The diagnostic reports revealed the presence of foreign material lodged inside her abdominal cavity, confirming that surgical items used during her C-section had been mistakenly left inside her body prior to suturing.
Emergency Extraction Surgery in Pune
Given the rapidly deteriorating state of her health, Sandhya was immediately transferred to Sassoon Hospital in Pune for specialized care. A medical team performed emergency surgery to extract the foreign objects, successfully removing surgical gloves and paper tissue wipes from her abdomen. Due to the presence of these surgical items inside her body over an extended period, she suffered internal infection, leaving her in a critical state with ongoing intensive treatment.
Family Distress and Allegations of Malpractice
The ordeal has left the patient's family distressed and demanding accountability. Describing her daughter's physical state, Sandhya's mother expressed grief over the fact that the young mother lacks even the basic strength required to hold her newborn baby in her arms. The patient's husband has leveled direct accusations of professional negligence against the surgical team responsible for the initial delivery.
Formal Complaint Filed and Official Probe Initiated
On August 18, the family submitted a formal complaint to the administration of the Beed District Hospital. Confirming the development, Beed District Civil Surgeon Satishkumar Solanki stated that show-cause notices have been issued to the doctor and medical personnel involved in the surgery. Solanki assured that if the health department's investigation establishes guilt, strict disciplinary measures will be enforced against those responsible.
