With the onset of monsoon rains across Western Uttar Pradesh, snake and python sightings have witnessed a sharp rise in both rural and urban areas of Meerut district. As rainwater inundates underground burrows and natural shelters, reptiles are frequently invading residential areas in search of dry ground. The surge in sightings has created anxiety among local residents. Addressing the situation, wildlife authorities and health experts have advised the public to maintain caution, avoid self-handling, and report every sighting immediately to rescue teams.
Immediate Reporting to Forest Officials and Safe Distance Rules
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Vandana Phogat has appealed to residents to notify the Forest Department instantly upon spotting any snake or python in their surroundings. Upon receiving information, expert rescue units are deployed to catch the reptiles safely and release them back into suitable forest habitats. Authorities strongly warn citizens against provoking, cornering, or attempting to capture snakes independently. When threatened or provoked, snakes are driven to strike defensively. Maintaining a safe physical distance is essential to prevent avoidable encounters and injuries.
Prioritize Medical Emergency Care Over Traditional Faith Healing
Highlighting a major public safety hazard, DFO Vandana Phogat and medical practitioners pointed out that snakebite victims frequently lose critical time due to superstitious practices like faith healing. Delaying professional medical intervention allows snake venom to disseminate rapidly through the bloodstream, escalating the severity of poisoning and leading to preventable fatalities. Health experts emphasize that immediate transport to the nearest hospital for anti-venom treatment and emergency clinical care remains the only proven approach to saving lives following a snakebite encounter.
Rising Python Sightings in Residential Hubs Demand Vigilance
Recent reports highlight that pythons are increasingly appearing across prominent urban localities in Meerut, including Lalkurti Bazaar, Jagriti Vihar, and Ganganagar. Forest Department rescue teams have successfully retrieved several pythons from these populated quarters in a timely manner. While pythons are non-venomous, their hunting style involves powerful constriction and sharp bites, making them hazardous if confronted. Forest officials urge all residents to remain alert throughout the rainy season and immediately seek official intervention whenever a wild reptile is sighted.
