A major atmospheric transition is reshaping conditions across India as two distinct weather systems change the national climate profile. The southwest monsoon concluded its nationwide withdrawal on October 15, immediately giving way to the arrival of the northeast monsoon, which has established an active precipitation cycle across multiple provinces. Meteorological forecasts indicate that intermittent downpours, squally winds, and thunderstorm activity will persist in several territories through October 21. From the snow-clad peaks of the far north to the coastal stretches of the southern peninsula, residents are experiencing an abrupt shift in temperatures and wind patterns.
Snow Accumulation in Mountains and Strong Winds Across Northern Plains
Highland regions have witnessed steady snowfall over the past three days, and higher altitudes in Jammu and Kashmir as well as Himachal Pradesh are expected to record additional accumulations on October 16. Alongside the freezing conditions on high ridgelines, lower reaches across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad face rainfall activity. Further eastward across the Himalayas, scattered precipitation is projected for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between October 16 and 17, intensifying autumn chill across mountain communities.
Across the northern plains, a light rain advisory covers Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, eastern Rajasthan, and eastern Uttar Pradesh. These regions are likely to encounter gusty breezes clocking between 30 and 40 kilometers per hour, with isolated spells surging up to 50 kilometers per hour. The accompanying showers and turbulent winds are expected to drive down daytime heat and introduce early seasonal crispness into the regional atmosphere.
Vigorous Rain and Squally Gales Across Southern Peninsular Territories
The onset of the northeast monsoon has sharply accelerated convective activity throughout southern India. Heavy rainfall is forecast between October 16 and 19 across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, and south interior Karnataka. During this four-day window, coastal belts and adjacent interiors could be buffeted by sustained winds ranging from 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, occasionally peaking at 60 kilometers per hour in storm zones.
In Tamil Nadu, the regional weather center has raised alerts for severe downpours accompanied by thunderstorms across nine specific districts over the next two days: the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Erode, Tiruppur, Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Tiruvannamalai. Meanwhile, Chennai and its metropolitan neighborhood are slated to receive moderate showers, with northern sections of the state likely to log precipitation totals below standard seasonal averages.
Thunderstorm Warnings Issued for Central and Western Districts in Maharashtra
Instability is also spreading into parts of western India, prompting localized precautionary measures. A yellow alert has been posted for Nanded district in Maharashtra for October 17 and 18, flagging threats of lightning strikes, cloudburst-like thunder, and light to moderate showers. According to regional meteorological assessments from Mumbai, gusts traveling between 30 and 40 kilometers per hour could accompany these localized squalls, urging residents and rural workers to stay alert during sudden lightning episodes.
