A shocking incident has emerged from Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, where a farm laborer walked into a local government hospital carrying his own severed hand. The 32-year-old victim, Munyandi, sustained this horrific injury during a violent altercation at an agricultural property, where a dispute over labor duties escalated into a brutal physical attack with a harvesting sickle. The sight of the victim walking in with his amputated limb sent shockwaves through the medical facility.
Work Dispute Escalates into Brutal Violence
The conflict arose at an agricultural property owned by Ishwaran, situated near Goundachipalayam. Munyandi, a native of the Dindigul district, had only recently moved to the area to take up employment at this farm. However, another 32-year-old laborer named Ranjith had already been employed at the same property for several years, specializing in harvesting coconuts.
The entry of Munyandi sparked a professional rivalry between the two workers. They soon got into a heated disagreement regarding their respective roles and shares in the coconut harvesting tasks on Friday. The verbal argument quickly turned physical when Ranjith, in a fit of rage, allegedly drew a sharp sickle used for farming and slashed Munyandi, completely severing his hand from his arm.
A Courageous Journey to the Hospital
Despite suffering from excruciating physical pain and heavy bleeding, Munyandi showed extraordinary presence of mind. Instead of losing hope, he gathered his severed hand, carefully placed it inside a plastic bag, and managed to secure a private ambulance to transport himself to the Dharapuram Government Hospital.
The medical staff at the local facility were deeply shocked to see a patient walking in while carrying his own amputated limb. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the duty doctors immediately administered emergency first-aid and stabilized the patient. However, the Dharapuram facility lacked the specialized micro-surgery infrastructure and surgical specialists required to perform a complex limb reattachment procedure.
Preservation of the Limb and Referral
To give the victim the best possible chance of recovery, the medical team carefully cleaned the severed hand and placed it inside a temperature-controlled ice box to preserve the tissues. In limb reattachment cases, the window of time is extremely critical, which is why the doctors acted with immense speed. They then arranged for Munyandi to be transferred immediately to the Coimbatore Government Hospital, which is equipped with advanced surgical facilities for such emergencies.
Local law enforcement was alerted to the incident, leading to the registration of a formal case by the Mulanur police. Investigating officers are currently examining the sequence of events and are seeking to apprehend the suspect while gathering evidence from the farm where the violent dispute transpired. The injured laborer remains under specialized medical care in Coimbatore.
