The Delhi government has launched a Green Drive Portal to hand out free saplings for tree plantation, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah has posted on X urging Delhi residents to plant trees wherever land is available to help realise the dream of a green Delhi.
What the Green Drive Portal offers
The portal was launched under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurating it from the Delhi Secretariat on July 2. Its key feature lets Delhi residents book a slot from home and receive free saplings in return. The idea behind the portal is not just to distribute plants but to directly involve ordinary citizens in the plantation drive so it does not remain a mere government scheme on paper.
The 70 lakh sapling target and Amit Shah's role
The overall campaign has set a target of planting around 70 lakh saplings across Delhi. As part of this push, Union Home Minister Amit Shah formally launched a monsoon plantation drive from Delhi's Ridge area on July 7 and reiterated the same 70 lakh sapling target. Reports indicate that on the same occasion he also dedicated 300 new electric buses to Delhi, and the campaign is further expected to see more than one crore native saplings planted across the city.
What Amit Shah wrote in his post
In his post, Amit Shah wrote that the Delhi government has launched the Green Drive Portal for tree plantation, through which people will get free saplings. He clearly urged Delhi residents to plant trees wherever vacant land is available and fulfil the resolve of a green Delhi. He also shared the portal's link so people could directly sign up.
Public reaction
Reactions to Amit Shah's post were mixed. Many welcomed the plantation push as a necessary and praiseworthy step for the environment, while some users raised the point that the government should focus not just on planting saplings but on fixing accountability for watering and nurturing them until they actually grow into trees.
