A Manipuri musician was beaten to death in Delhi simply for asking a group of men to stop making noise and drinking outside his home. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has expressed deep anguish over the incident on the social media platform X.
What happened
According to news reports, Chongtham Vikram Singh, a well known musician from Manipur, was living in Delhi. Some men were drinking and creating a ruckus outside his home. Disturbed by the noise, Vikram Singh went downstairs and asked them to lower the noise or move away. His request angered the group, and what began as a minor argument quickly turned into a violent assault. Vikram Singh died from the beating. The attack took place right outside his own home, in the country's capital.
What Rahul Gandhi said
Rahul Gandhi wrote on X that Vikram Singh had merely gone down to ask for the noise to be lowered, and that request cost him his life. He wrote, "A father, killed outside his own home, in his own country's capital." Gandhi also pointed out that such incidents have happened before, and that they are deepening a sense of fear and insecurity among families from the Northeast.
Public reaction
Rahul Gandhi's post drew a mixed response online. Several users offered condolences to Vikram Singh's family, while others questioned whether the incident would be investigated fairly and firmly.
