Tourists visiting the Betla area of the Palamu Tiger Reserve can now experience a more thrilling jungle safari as authorities have introduced new open safari vehicles. Traditionally, four-wheelers operated exclusively from the Bison Gate, but the newly developed safari circuit allows visitors to travel directly to prominent locations such as the Palamu Fort and Kamaldaha Lake, combining natural beauty, historical heritage, and wildlife observation into a single journey.
A New 9 to 10-Kilometer Safari Circuit
Deputy Director Prajesh Kant Jena explained that the new Betla circuit covers a distance of approximately 9 to 10 kilometers, with the entire journey lasting between one and two hours. Along this route, visitors get the opportunity to explore the areas surrounding the New Fort, Old Fort, and Kamaldaha Lake. The designated route allows travelers to observe the dense greenery, natural environment, and wildlife activity up close before the vehicle returns along the same path.
Spotting Elephants, Bisons, and Leopards
Wildlife presence in the Betla region remains a major drawing card for visitors. Around the new circuit, travelers may spot elephants, bisons, leopards, deer, rabbits, wild boars, and other fauna. However, officials noted that animal sightings depend entirely on weather conditions, time of day, and animal movement, meaning sightings during any given safari run cannot be guaranteed.
A Special Destination for Bird Watching
Authorities highlighted that the circuit caters not just to mammal enthusiasts but also to bird watchers. The forested patches and water bodies harbor various bird species, including jungle orioles, kingfishers, and ibises. The natural surroundings near Kamaldaha Lake serve as a primary attraction for visitors who enjoy observing birds in their natural habitat.
Safari Cost and the Vital Role of Drivers and Guides
The jungle safari along this new route is priced at 1950 rupees. Out of this total amount, 300 rupees are allocated to the guide, while the remainder covers vehicle operation and driver expenses. Additionally, a maintenance fee goes to the Eco Development Committee. To ensure smooth operations, authorities are working on providing professional training to drivers and guides. The operational timing for the safari is from 6 AM to 6 PM, though visitors are advised to confirm actual availability, bookings, and timings directly with the safari management.
A Blend of History and Natural Wonder
The standout feature of the new circuit is its ability to offer both wildlife exploration and a glimpse into the cultural heritage of the Palamu Fort. Coupled with the scenic landscape and bird watching opportunities at Kamaldaha Lake, the Betla safari circuit delivers a comprehensive and novel experience for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and history buffs alike.
