Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh posted a tribute to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on the social media platform X, marking his 125th Jayanti observed on July 6, 2026. In his message, Singh described Mookerjee as a visionary statesman, a distinguished scholar and a committed nation-builder who devoted his entire life to preserving the unity of the nation, strengthening democratic institutions and advancing the cause of national interest.
Other leaders also paid tribute
Rajnath Singh was not the only leader remembering Mookerjee that day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute, saying Mookerjee embodied intellect, public service and moral conviction. Modi said the abrogation of Article 370 stood as a fitting tribute to Mookerjee, adding that his vision continues to guide India even today, and that the objective of Mookerjee's entire life was to protect the unity of India.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also paid tribute, saying Mookerjee saved Bengal from the "bloody clutches of Pakistan." Union Home Minister Amit Shah remembered Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary as well. A day earlier, the Chief Minister of Haryana had already paid floral tribute, saying Mookerjee always envisioned an undivided India.
About Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee
Syama Prasad Mookerjee was an Indian barrister, educationalist and politician associated with the Hindutva movement, who went on to serve as a minister in both state and national governments. During India's independence movement, he was notably opposed to the Quit India Movement, a stance that set him apart from the mainstream Congress leadership of the time. Even though he had opposed the Congress party, Jawaharlal Nehru still appointed him to the cabinet. After breaking away from the Hindu Mahasabha, Mookerjee served as Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Nehru's cabinet. He later resigned from that cabinet after falling out with Nehru over his protest against the Liaquat-Nehru Pact. With support from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, he then founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, an organisation whose legacy is still frequently invoked in Indian politics today.
Public reaction
Rajnath Singh's post drew a mixed response on social media. Several users expressed admiration for Mookerjee's contributions to the country and shared their own inspiration to serve the nation, while other users raised pointed questions in response to the post.
