Union Home Minister Amit Shah took to the social media platform X on 25 June to recall the Emergency imposed in the country, describing it as the darkest chapter in the history of Indian democracy. Marking the date as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' (Constitution Murder Day), he paid tribute to everyone who fought to protect democracy during that period.
In his post, Shah took direct aim at Indira Gandhi and the Congress party. He said 25 June 1975 was the day when the arrogance and greed for power tried to suppress the soul of the Constitution, the freedom of the press and the right to expression.

25 June 1975 is that dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy when the arrogance and greed for power of Indira Gandhi and the Congress party attempted to crush the soul of the Constitution, the freedom of the press and the right to expression.
He went on to remember, on the occasion of 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas', all those defenders of democracy who raised their voices during that difficult time to safeguard the Constitution and democratic values.
