Donald Trump has posted on Truth Social claiming that oil prices are falling fast and that gasoline prices at the pump are also coming down, though not as quickly as he says they should. The post, from his handle @realDonaldTrump, arrives just days before America's 250th birthday and highlights a Northeast fuel retailer's plan to cut gas prices in the Philadelphia area.
How gas prices became a flashpoint
The backdrop to this post is the fallout from the military confrontation involving Iran. Oil prices shot past $100 a barrel in March 2026 after the leadership change in Iran, dragging down the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500 in the process. By April, an already shaky U.S. economy was reported to be in real trouble. In May, there were warnings that gas prices could end up higher than they were under the Biden administration. It was only by the end of June that reports pointed out experts had been wrong to expect gas prices to stay elevated for long, since prices had already begun sliding.
Trump's DOJ order on oil companies
In the last week of June, Trump said he had directed the Department of Justice to target oil companies over high gas prices. He is now framing the recent drop in prices as proof that pressure on oil companies is working.
What Trump wrote in the post
Trump wrote that, just as he promised, oil prices are plummeting fast, and gas prices at the pump are dropping too, though not as fast as they should be. He said a very smart retailer located throughout the Northeast is stepping up to wish the people of Philadelphia a Happy Birthday as America's 250th birthday approaches. According to the post, the Freedom Fuel Network will lower gas prices at 25 Freedom Fuel stations across the Greater Philadelphia area on July 3rd. Trump said this retailer is taking the lead and that others should follow, adding that they are doing it because they love the U.S.A.
Pennsylvania and the Declaration of Independence
Trump singled out Pennsylvania, calling it the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence, and noted that he won big there in the Presidential Election. He claimed America has never been stronger than it is now and predicted gas prices will soon return to the record low levels Americans saw at the pump before what he called the country's very successful excursion in Iran. He signed off the post with Happy Birthday America and President DONALD J. TRUMP.
