Even as 79 years have passed since India gained independence, farmers and military veterans in the Chhata region of Mathura district continue their struggle for economic revival. While the nation celebrated Independence Day, local agriculturalists and ex-servicemen were gathered outside the gates of the defunct Chhata Sugar Mill, pitching tents for an indefinite sit-in. Amid general festivities across the country, these protesters remained firm on their single demand: the immediate operationalization of the industrial unit that has stayed shuttered for several decades.
The 'Where Is the Key' Satyagraha and Escalating Public Support
The current wave of agitation began on 9 August 2026, when Deepak Sharma, a resident of Vrindavan, took a pledge to force administrative action regarding the closed mill under Chhata tehsil. Sharma staged a protest directly at the sugar mill's entrance, raising the central slogan 'Where is the key?'. Over the first two days, news of the sit-in circulated through surrounding rural belts, bringing an outpouring of public backing. Farmers, daily earners, and local residents began arriving at the site in substantial numbers, transforming a solitary demonstration into a widespread community movement.
Third-Day Violence and Direct Allegations Against Cabinet Minister
The demonstration took a severe turn on its third day when unknown assailants attacked Deepak Sharma at the protest venue. Reports indicate that the attackers assaulted him brutally, escalating to a life-threatening assault when he attempted to seek cover. Following the incident, social activists and political leaders from various parties began converging at the Chhata Sugar Mill premises.
Deepak Sharma alleged that the assault was a deliberate attempt to clear the protest site by force, accompanied by direct death threats. He placed explicit allegations against current Cabinet Minister Chaudhary Laxmi Narayan and his nephew Chaudhary Nardev for orchestrating the violent intimidation.
Sanctioned Budget of 551 Crore Rupees and Protesters' Determination
Official records show that a dedicated budget of 551 crore rupees was approved specifically for reopening and restructuring the sugar mill under the Chhata assembly segment. Furthermore, financial declarations included a monthly maintenance allocation ranging between 60 to 87 lakh rupees annually to ensure operational readiness. Protesters pointed out that despite these massive funds and repeated declarations, the facility remains non-functional, serving merely as a recurring campaign promise during election cycles.
Representatives from the Ex-Servicemen Council present at the demonstration stated that their blockade will persist unconditionally until the sugar mill is fully restarted. Addressing the physical assault on Deepak Sharma, the council leaders issued a firm stance, stating that intimidation tactics will not deter the ongoing agitation until the facility becomes operational for local farmers.
