Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has posted on social media platform X to announce that he will travel to Dehradun on July 17. In the post, he explained why he was choosing Uttarakhand of all places, pointing to the state's repeated recruitment exam paper leak cases. Rahul Gandhi alleged that Uttarakhand, often referred to as Devbhoomi, has been turned into the epicentre of paper leaks. He added in his message that the issue was not tied to a single exam alone, but to the trust and future of thousands of young people.
What Rahul Gandhi wrote in his post
In his post, Rahul Gandhi directly targeted the recruitment exams conducted by UKSSSC, the Uttarakhand Subordinate Service Selection Commission. He wrote that a system has taken root inside these exams, where posts such as patwari, lekhpal or other government jobs are not awarded on merit but instead go to whoever pays the rate fixed by criminals. In effect, his allegation is that seats are being bought with money rather than earned through merit. Through this allegation, Rahul Gandhi appears to be arguing that young people who spend years preparing for these exams are being directly wronged, since jobs are being distributed on the basis of money rather than ability. He said that once the credibility of recruitment exams itself comes into question, young people lose faith in the entire system. He also referred to the state government's strict anti cheating measures later in the post, though that part of his message trailed off into a link and remained incomplete, so the full context of that remark is not clear from the post itself. It also raises the question of why paper leak cases continue despite the state's strict anti cheating law.
The July 17 programme, Chhatron Ki Goonj
According to news reports, Rahul Gandhi will take part in a programme called Chhatron Ki Goonj in Dehradun on July 17, where he is expected to interact directly with young people. The event was initially proposed at the Parade Ground, but the administration suggested holding it at Bannu school ground instead. The Congress party has already begun preparations for the programme. The visit comes at a time when the party is working to court the student and youth vote ahead of the upcoming Uttarakhand assembly elections, and raising the paper leak issue appears to be part of that outreach, aimed at assuring young people that their hard work will be fairly rewarded.
A weather warning for Uttarakhand too
Around the same period as Rahul Gandhi's visit, a weather warning has also been issued for Uttarakhand. Heavy rain has been forecast in around five districts of the state, including Dehradun and Nainital. This shift in weather could have a bearing on the arrangements for the large gathering planned in Dehradun, as well as on the turnout of people travelling there.
About Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand is a state in north India that was formed on November 9, 2000, as the 27th state of the Republic of India after years of agitation. Between 2000 and 2006 it was known as Uttaranchal, before its name was officially changed back to Uttarakhand in January 2007 in response to local sentiment. The state borders Tibet to the north and Nepal to the east, while Himachal Pradesh lies to its west and Uttar Pradesh to its south. Before it became a separate state in 2000, it was part of Uttar Pradesh. Uttarakhand is also home to Gangotri and Yamunotri, the source points of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, which is one reason the state is often referred to as Devbhoomi, the land of the gods.
Public reaction
Rahul Gandhi's post drew a mixed response on social media. Some users backed his remarks on the paper leak issue, calling it a serious question tied to the future of young job seekers, while others asked why the party stayed quiet over exam irregularities reported in other states. A number of reactions also reflected curiosity about the upcoming Dehradun programme.
