Panic gripped the busy Chembur neighborhood in Mumbai after a chemical tanker began leaking hazardous benzene, prompting an immediate emergency response. Upon receiving information about the dangerous situation, local police and fire brigade units rushed to the scene to tackle the crisis. To ensure public safety, authorities implemented precautionary measures by closing off roadways within a two-kilometer radius around the incident site to prevent any potential disasters or civilian exposure.
Rescue Operation Completed and Traffic Restored
According to official details, the leak originated from the bottom valve of a tanker with a capacity of roughly 22 thousand tonnes carrying benzene. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Mumbai Fire Brigade acted swiftly to secure the area and initiate containment work. Fortunately, despite the alarming nature of the incident, there have been no reports of any injuries or casualties. Once the area was secured, the affected road surface was thoroughly washed down with jet water, after which normal traffic was fully restored.
Chemical Transferred to Another Tanker
Officials noted that the incident involving the benzene-carrying tanker bearing registration number GJ 05 CU 9629 occurred on Monday night near Mysore Colony in Chembur. The leak, which was detected around 8:12 PM near the monorail station, was brought under control without major delays. The remaining hazardous chemical inside the compromised vehicle was successfully pumped out and transferred into an empty tanker to neutralize any ongoing risks.
Glacial Acetic Acid Tanker Tilts in Mulund
In a separate incident on the same Monday night, authorities reported another transport mishap in Mulund West. A tanker transporting glacial acetic acid tilted after getting stuck in a roadside chamber along LBS Marg. The event took place around 8:52 PM near Vaishali Nagar. Personnel from the fire brigade and local ward offices promptly arrived at the location, employing cranes in an effort to pull the tilted vehicle out safely.
Fire Breaks Out in Onion Trailer in Dhar
Meanwhile, a separate major accident was reported from the Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh. Chaos ensued along the Rau-Khalghat four-lane highway when a sudden fire broke out on Monday in a trailer loaded with onions at Ganpati Ghat. The flames spread with alarming speed, reducing the cabin of the trailer to ashes. The vehicle was carrying a massive consignment of onions worth lakhs of rupees.
