New Delhi: Starting his career in Hindi cinema as a villain, Shatrughan Sinha successfully transitioned into a lead actor before establishing himself as a significant political figure. Currently serving as an MP for the Trinamool Congress, Sinha discussed the trying period following the Bengal assembly elections where the party faced a major defeat against the BJP. While many leaders abandoned the party during the subsequent turmoil, Shatrughan Sinha chose to remain with former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He explained that his choice to stand by her is based on deep personal emotion rather than political calculation, recalling that Mamata Banerjee stood by him during his own darkest times.
The emotional bond with Mamata Banerjee
For Sinha, loyalty is a matter of principle. He emphasized that walking away from someone who supported him during a crisis is not how he operates. His commitment to Mamata Banerjee remains firm, even when faced with the exodus of other party members who chose to defect under pressure.
Children's political leanings and Sonakshi's perspective
When asked about the political involvement of his children, Shatrughan Sinha noted that they have varying interests. He mentioned that his son, Luv, has shown significant interest in the BJP. His other son, Kush, has ventured into direction, with his recent film 'Nikita Roy' trending at the number 1 spot on OTT platforms. Kush is also part of a social group involving the children of BJP leaders. Regarding Sonakshi Sinha, he stated firmly that she has absolutely no interest in politics.
Touched by Sonakshi's words
Shatrughan Sinha shared that while many people urged him to bring Sonakshi into the political fold, she has no inclination toward it. He recounted a moving conversation where he feared Sonakshi might question why he did not switch sides like others. Instead, she expressed pride in his character. She told him that she was proud of him for remaining firm during a time when many others were being bought or were choosing to flee. Hearing her say this brought a sense of relief and tears to his eyes.
Reflecting on his political and film past
Shatrughan Sinha also touched upon his earlier political life, having started his journey with the BJP. He recalled how, at the request of a senior leader, he contested an election against the legendary Rajesh Khanna, an act he later deeply regretted as they were friends. Looking back at his cinematic beginnings, he reminded that his film career launched with Dev Anand’s 'Prem Pujari'. He also spoke affectionately about his son-in-law, Zaheer Iqbal, describing him as a lovely person and noting that he and Sonakshi seem perfectly made for each other.
