Babu Bandhu Singh was a prominent freedom fighter from Gorakhpur who waged a relentless struggle against the British East India Company. Refusing to submit to imperialist dominance, he organized and led strategic guerrilla warfare against British forces from dense forest hideouts. Recognized as a formidable threat by the colonial administration, he was eventually captured and sentenced to public execution at Ali Nagar Square in Gorakhpur on August 12, 1858.
The Miracle of Tarkulha Devi and the Gallows Legend
Babu Bandhu Singh was a devout worshiper of Goddess Tarkulha Devi. Local historical lore and regional accounts record that when British executioners attempted to hang him at Ali Nagar Square, the gallows rope snapped miraculously seven consecutive times. Stunned by the extraordinary occurrence, the colonial authorities looked on as Bandhu Singh himself offered prayers to Goddess Tarkulha Devi, asking for permission to embrace martyrdom. On the eighth attempt, he laid down his life on August 12, 1858. Today, the Tarkulha Devi Temple in Gorakhpur remains a symbol of deep spiritual faith and patriotic remembrance.
