A deeply disturbing incident of ragging and assault has surfaced from a government residential school hostel in the Rayagada district of Odisha. More than 20 Class 9 students at SSD High School were brutally beaten by their Class 10 seniors. The violent attack occurred after the junior students formally reported ongoing harassment and ragging to the school headmaster. Enraged by the complaint, the senior students retaliated with physical violence late at night.
Seniors Launch Attack Inside Locked Room Following Complaint
The assault took place inside the hostel premises late on Sunday night. According to available details, a Class 10 student along with a group of other senior students summoned around 20 Class 9 pupils to a specific room under the pretext of a meeting. Once the junior students entered, the seniors locked the room and launched a sudden, ferocious assault using cricket bats and wooden sticks.
Just a few days prior to the attack, the junior students had approached the school headmaster to highlight the continuous ragging, bullying, and mental harassment they were enduring inside the hostel. When news of this complaint reached the senior students, they viewed it as a defiance of their authority and plotted the violent retaliation.
Viral Video Exposes Assault as Injured Students Are Hospitalized
The severity of the incident came to light after a video recording of the assault began circulating widely on social media platforms. The footage showed senior students relentlessly beating defenseless juniors with bats and sticks. Several victims sustained notable physical injuries across their bodies during the prolonged beatings.
Following the public exposure of the video, school officials were forced into action. The injured boys were promptly transferred to a local hospital for medical evaluation and care. Simultaneously, the school administration reached out to the parents of the affected students to inform them about the assault, triggering intense anger among guardians.
Victim Details Persistent Abuse and Ignored Complaints
Shubham Nayak, one of the injured Class 9 students receiving treatment at the hospital, shared troubling details about the environment inside the hostel. He alleged that junior students had been subjected to physical torture and systemic harassment over an extended period, with seniors routinely using wooden sticks to intimidate them.
Nayak emphasized that the victims had brought these recurring abuses to the attention of teachers and hostel staff on multiple occasions. However, the authorities consistently failed to initiate any protective measures or disciplinary actions against the bullies, leaving the younger boys vulnerable to escalated violence.
District Administration Issues Show-Cause Notice to Incharge Headmaster
In response to the outrage, the Rayagada district administration initiated a formal inquiry into the violence and administrative lapses. Recognizing clear negligence in handling prior grievances, officials issued an official show-cause notice to the school incharge headmaster for failing to address ragging complaints with appropriate seriousness.
District authorities instructed the school management to ensure immediate reporting of any such incidents to higher authorities in the future. Officials also warned that stringent disciplinary and legal measures would be instituted against everyone found responsible for the assault or negligent in their duties.
