A major controversy has erupted across the entertainment industry and social circles following the abrupt removal of actor Diljit Dosanjh's political drama film 'Satluj' from the OTT platform ZEE5. The movie, which was quietly released on the streaming platform, was taken down within just two days of its release, triggering a fierce backlash from the Sikh community. In response, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has strongly condemned the streaming platform's decision. The committee has described the removal as a deliberate and systematic attempt to suppress historical truths and silence the legacy of the renowned human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. Observing the growing resentment within the community, the DSGMC has now taken the responsibility upon itself to bring the film to the public through nationwide screenings.
DSGMC Protests Removal and Outlines Public Screening Plans
The biographical drama is based on the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist who highlighted severe human rights violations, including forced disappearances and extrajudicial cremations, during the militancy and police operations in Punjab during the 1980s and 1990s. DSGMC President Harmeet Singh Kalka expressed strong disapproval of the film's sudden removal, describing Jaswant Singh Khalra as a heroic social activist who confronted the world with undeniable facts. Kalka emphasized that Khalra had gathered concrete documentary evidence regarding the illegal cremation of approximately 25,000 unidentified and unclaimed bodies by the police in Punjab during that turbulent era, raising the issue on international platforms. According to Kalka, stopping such an educational and truth-revealing cinematic work from reaching the public is highly unfortunate.
In light of the sentiments of the Sikh community, the DSGMC has issued directives to all its gurdwara committee members across different regions. The members have been instructed to download the film and organize public screenings in their respective local areas. Additionally, to educate and spread awareness among the youth about the historical events of Punjab, the committee plans to organize dedicated seminars and educational discussions on the life, struggle, and human rights contributions of Jaswant Singh Khalra in all schools and colleges operating under the management of the DSGMC.

Directed by Honey Trehan, 'Satluj' features Diljit Dosanjh playing the central character of Jaswant Singh Khalra. The plot of the film revolves around the transformation of a simple bank clerk into a passionate human rights campaigner. It portrays how Khalra, while working at a bank in Amritsar, began investigating the cases of youth disappearing in Punjab. He eventually exposed the grim reality of alleged fake encounters and the clandestine disposal of bodies by local authorities during the state's period of militancy.
In 1995, Khalra disappeared under highly mysterious circumstances. A decade after his disappearance, a court convicted four Punjab Police personnel of his abduction, torture, and murder. However, his physical remains were never recovered, leaving behind a tragic and deeply significant chapter in the modern history of human rights struggles in India.
The Long Legal Struggle and Censorship Hurdles
The journey of this film has been plagued by legal battles and censorship disputes since its inception. Originally titled 'Punjab 95', the movie faced a grueling four-year struggle to obtain clearance from the Censor Board (CBFC), which had demanded approximately 120 cuts to approve its theatrical release. Avoiding the traditional promotional campaigns, trailers, or press announcements, the film was suddenly released on ZEE5 under the new title 'Satluj' on Friday, without the previously demanded cuts.
However, the film was pulled from the streaming platform on Sunday, just two days after its sudden debut. While the streaming company cited the need for certain modifications and changes as the primary reason for taking down the film, sources suggest that the action was prompted by alleged violations of digital IT rules. Produced under the banners of RSVP and Macguffin Pictures, 'Satluj' features a notable supporting cast including Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, and Suvinder Vicky in key roles alongside Diljit Dosanjh.
