A major security breach has rocked the union territory as two inmates successfully escaped from the Srinagar Central Jail by scaling the prison walls. The sudden disappearance of the prisoners has triggered widespread concern and put security agencies on high alert. In response to the escape, the police have swiftly issued a lookout notice, releasing official photographs of both fugitives to help the public identify them and report any potential sightings immediately.
Details Of The Escaped Inmates And Their Cases
According to police records, the first fugitive has been identified as Farman Khan, son of Abdul Ghani Khan, who hails from Sadanpora in Rajasthan. He was lodged in the prison on June 23, 2026, and faces charges under Section 137(2) and Section 87 of the BNS, along with provisions of the POCSO Act, registered under FIR number 19/2026. The second escapee is Mukhtar Ahmad गुर्जर, son of Mohammad Rafiq, a resident of Sanglan Chittargul in Anantnag. He faces charges under Section 137(2) and Section 65(1) of the BNS, registered under FIR number 20/2026, though his exact date of arrival in the jail is not specified in the official records.
Security Agencies On High Alert And Internal Probe
Following the brazen breakout from the central facility, security forces and intelligence agencies have intensified surveillance across all potential hideouts, transit routes, and entry-exit points. A red alert has reportedly been sounded across the Kashmir valley, and concerted search operations are currently underway to apprehend the runaways. Concurrently, the jail administration has initiated a thorough internal investigation to uncover how the inmates managed to scale the wall and escape, and whether there were any critical lapses in the prison's security apparatus.
Public Appeal And Emergency Contact Information
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have strongly urged citizens not to attempt to apprehend Farman Khan or Mukhtar Ahmad गुर्जर on their own if spotted. Instead, people have been requested to immediately inform the nearest police station or dial the emergency number 112 to relay information. This incident follows earlier security concerns involving the recovery of digital devices inside the Srinagar Central Jail during police raids, alongside a separate recent accident at the Kupwara jail where nine inmates were severely injured in a gas cylinder blast.
