Amid an intensifying contest to consolidate Muslim voters across the state, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has made a significant political move by extending an alliance proposal to Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav. However, the Hyderabad lawmaker accompanied his offer with a sharp warning, cautioning that if Akhilesh Yadav fails to form an electoral understanding in time, his party could face a defeat similar to the one experienced by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav in Bihar.
Criticism of SP and Congress Over Minority Representation
Addressing the political landscape in Uttar Pradesh, Owaisi targeted both the Samajwadi Party and Congress, questioning their commitment toward minority rights. He alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and Akhilesh Yadav share equal responsibility for the hardships endured by Muslims in the state. Owaisi asserted that certain political figures position themselves as the exclusive custodians of minority votes, yet they remain silent in their residences whenever actual issues concerning Muslim rights arise. He argued that their opposition to the BJP is largely superficial and lacks meaningful ideological difference.
Responding on Thursday to criticisms leveled by the Congress party, Owaisi dismissed the claims made by Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi as mere theatrical displays. On Wednesday, Owaisi had emphasized the necessity of cultivating independent Muslim leadership within Uttar Pradesh, a statement that Congress labeled as an attempt to assist the BJP. Rejecting this accusation, Owaisi countered that neither party genuinely desires the emergence of strong minority leaders, labeling them as major obstacles to genuine political representation for Muslims.
Referencing Bihar Election Dynamics
To substantiate his warning, Owaisi pointed to previous electoral experiences in Bihar. He recounted that during the Bihar assembly elections, AIMIM had sought a modest allocation of 5 seats within the coalition, but the request was completely disregarded. Furthermore, he highlighted how the Samajwadi Party leadership actively deployed a delegation of Muslim parliamentarians to campaign against AIMIM candidates to ensure their defeat. Despite these past grievances, Owaisi noted that the opportunity for an alliance remains open, emphasizing that a failure to unite could lead to severe political consequences for the opposition in Uttar Pradesh.
