Political activity in Uttar Pradesh has intensified significantly as major political parties gear up for the upcoming assembly elections scheduled for next year. Against the backdrop of these heightened electoral preparations, Bahujan Samaj Party national president Mayawati has taken decisive disciplinary action within her party organization. Senior leader and former state health minister Anant Kumar Mishra, popularly known as Antu Mishra, has been expelled from the Bahujan Samaj Party with immediate effect over charges of anti-party activities. Considered a prominent and influential figure in the Kanpur region, his sudden removal has stirred political circles across the state.
Mayawati’s Stern Warning and Direct Appeal to Party Cadre
The announcement regarding this major organizational move was made directly by Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati. In a formal statement posted on X, she confirmed that Anant Kumar Mishra alias Antu Mishra, who previously served as health minister in the BSP state government, was being ousted from the party immediately due to his involvement in anti-party activities. Mayawati made it clear that any form of indiscipline during crucial election preparations would invite swift action.
Along with the expulsion order, Mayawati issued a stern directive to party workers, office-bearers, and cadre across all organizational levels in Uttar Pradesh. Highlighting that the state's political climate is rapidly warming up ahead of the assembly polls, she warned party members to remain vigilant against political opponents attempting to use tactics of all kinds, including coercion, inducement, and division. She urged all party functionaries to dedicate themselves with complete honesty and unwavering loyalty toward fulfilling BSP's Ambedkarite mission to secure success in the upcoming assembly elections.
Four Decades in Politics: From Student Union Leader to Cabinet Minister
Anant Kumar Mishra carries a long political career spanning nearly four decades. He entered public life during the 1980s through student union politics in Kanpur, where he was elected secretary of the Christ Church College Student Union. His early involvement in student activism subsequently led him to become the Uttar Pradesh state general secretary of the NSUI. Following his stint in student politics, he joined mainstream party politics by associating with the Samajwadi Party.
During the 1993 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party fielded Anant Kumar Mishra from the Generalganj constituency in Kanpur, though he lost that election. Later switching his political allegiance, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and contested the 2002 assembly election from the Aryanagar seat in Kanpur on a BJP ticket, but again suffered a defeat.
Kanpur Roots and Entry into the Bahujan Samaj Party
In 2006, after his previous electoral setbacks, Anant Kumar Mishra joined the Bahujan Samaj Party. The party fielded him as its candidate from the Sarsaul assembly constituency in Kanpur during the 2007 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Although Antu Mishra lost his individual contest in Sarsaul, the BSP achieved a decisive full majority across Uttar Pradesh and formed the state government.
Despite his defeat at the polls, BSP chief Mayawati inducted Anant Kumar Mishra into the administration as Minister of State for Health. Subsequently, he contested an election from the Farrukhabad Sadar constituency, won the seat, and was elevated to the status of full Cabinet Minister for Health in Uttar Pradesh. Over the years, he came to be recognized as a key Brahmin face for the party in Kanpur and neighboring districts.
Cracking Down on Indiscipline Ahead of Assembly Elections
Mayawati's recent series of strict disciplinary actions are viewed as a deliberate strategy to enforce organizational cohesion ahead of the polls. Just weeks prior, on August 2, the BSP chief had taken similar action by expelling former Rajya Sabha MP and her relative Ashok Siddharth from the party. Ashok Siddharth was removed from all organizational duties following allegations of indiscipline and violating party guidelines.
With these consecutive expulsions of senior and well-connected party leaders, Mayawati has sent an unambiguous message across the BSP organization that anti-party activities, internal factionalism, or indiscipline will not be tolerated as the party prepares for the upcoming assembly battle.
