Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman conducted a crucial bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. This event stands as the cornerstone of his four-day official visit to China. The two leaders engaged in extensive deliberations covering trade, investment, infrastructure development, regional connectivity, and the expansion of mutual cooperation. According to the Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary, Atiqur Rahman Rumon, the discussions commenced on Friday morning, during which Tarique Rahman presented several pressing issues concerning Bangladesh’s interests directly to Xi Jinping.
Expanding Economic and Infrastructure Ties
Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, Mahdi Amin, indicated that the conversation between the two leaders was expected to be comprehensive, touching upon shared interests in commerce and infrastructure. Reports from Bangladeshi media highlight that Tarique Rahman used this platform to advocate for key national priorities with the Chinese President. This followed his meeting on Thursday with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, where discussions centered on the Teesta project, trade, and investment. That meeting resulted in the signing of two formal agreements and 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MOU).
Deepening Strategic Partnerships
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) noted on the social media platform X that the high-level leadership meeting led to these 15 total documents, marking a significant step toward strengthening the cooperative partnership between Beijing and Dhaka. Tarique Rahman arrived in Dalian, China, on Monday night following a successful two-day official visit to Malaysia. This trip marks the first leg of his first foreign visit since assuming the office of Prime Minister.
Arms Deals and Defense Implications
The core objective of this visit appears to be the consolidation of both economic and defense ties. Strategic analysts are particularly focused on a potential defense deal involving the procurement of 24 J-10 CE fighter jets and the acquisition of advanced Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology from China. Such a move is widely interpreted as a strategic pivot by Dhaka toward Beijing, which may also conflict with commitments made under previous trade agreements with the United States.
Heightened Concerns for Regional Security
Experts warn that deepening defense cooperation between Bangladesh and China could significantly alter regional dynamics. There is growing concern in India, particularly regarding the potential deployment of advanced fighter aircraft in proximity to the Siliguri Corridor, known as the Chicken’s Neck, which is vital to Indian security. While no explicit prohibition against purchasing Chinese fighter jets or drones exists within the trade agreement signed on February 9 by the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus—an agreement that faced substantial criticism days before the general election—the geopolitical implications remain profound. The visit reflects a broader shift in Bangladesh's foreign policy following the collapse of the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina. It is evident that Dhaka is now aggressively prioritizing its relations with China, Turkey, and Pakistan as it charts a new course in international diplomacy.
