Earthquake tremors shook the Kashmir valley early Friday morning, causing panic among residents in the Kulgam district. People rushed out of their homes as the ground suddenly trembled just as the day was beginning. According to the National Center for Seismology, the magnitude of the earthquake was recorded at 3.6 on the Richter scale. Fortunately, no reports of any damage to property or loss of life have emerged from the area following the tremor, though fear gripped the local population.
Recent seismic activity in the region
Seismic activity has been frequently recorded across the region in recent times. Prior to this event, an earthquake measuring 3.2 in magnitude had also struck the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir during the evening hours, with its tremors felt across several parts of the Kashmir valley as well. Even during that instance, the lower intensity on the Richter scale averted any major destruction, although it left residents in a state of apprehension. Mountainous terrains remain particularly vulnerable to such sudden natural occurrences.
Depth and epicenter details
Data regarding such seismic events indicates that underground tectonic movements are usually responsible for these tremors. Although the low magnitude on the Richter scale prevented any major disaster in this instance, local authorities and disaster management teams continue to monitor the situation. This early morning jolt has once again reminded residents of the vulnerability of the region, as the Kashmir valley lies in a highly sensitive seismic zone where tremors have been documented frequently over the years.
