The upcoming by-election for the Datia assembly constituency in Madhya Pradesh has triggered a severe internal rift within the BJP. Supporters of Narottam Mishra have taken to the streets to express their deep resentment after he was denied a party ticket. The protests, which commenced on Saturday evening, intensified throughout the night, leading to a highly volatile situation in the region.
Blockade on National Highway 44
In a show of defiance, angry supporters staged a massive road blockade on National Highway 44. The sheer number of activists occupying the highway brought traffic to a complete standstill. The protesters demanded that the party leadership reconsider the selection of the candidate for the Datia by-election immediately. What started as a protest eventually descended into a direct confrontation between the demonstrators and local law enforcement.
Violence and Injuries to Officials
The situation turned violent when clashes broke out between the police and the agitated crowd. Reports confirm that the scene turned chaotic as protesters began pelting stones at the security forces. In the ensuing scuffle, six police personnel sustained injuries, including the Superintendent of Police (SP) and the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP). Law enforcement agencies were forced to use force and fire tear gas shells to regain control of the agitated mob and restore order.
Heightened Security Measures
Following the unrest, security has been significantly beefed up across Datia. Additional police forces have been deployed to the area, and security around the local BJP office has been tightened. Senior officials, including the SP and ASP, are personally monitoring the situation to prevent further outbreaks of violence. While the supporters maintain their stance that the candidate selection needs a review, the administration has vowed to take all necessary measures to uphold the rule of law and ensure that no further untoward incidents take place.
