The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly witnessed high drama on Wednesday as Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay declared that he holds official files concerning alleged corruption across three state government departments. Addressing the Assembly, Chief Minister Vijay cautioned former ministers and lawmakers belonging to the DMK against driving him to immediately expose the documents. He emphasized that he would choose the appropriate moment to make the detailed findings accessible to the public, setting off intense political friction in the chamber.
Fiery Debates Over Housing Allegations
The conflict escalated when Water Resources Minister N. Anand raised severe allegations regarding the execution of housing initiatives under the previous administration. Anand claimed that extensive corruption had taken place during the implementation of the housing program, asserting that residential units were wrongly allocated to ineligible individuals. His statements came right while former minister I. Periyasamy was addressing the House regarding the DMK's flagship welfare program, 'Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Thittam'. Anand's remarks prompted immediate protests from DMK legislators, who strongly contested the accusations on the Assembly floor.
Ministers Challenge Opposition on Evidence
Joining the discussion, School Education Minister A. Rajamohan criticized the opposition members for their reaction. Rajamohan stated that DMK lawmakers routinely fall silent whenever concrete proof of corruption is highlighted in the House. He remarked that one could hardly predict how opposition leaders would react if the Chief Minister decided to release the complete investigative report into the three departments. Refusing to step down, opposition members shouted slogans and demanded that the government immediately produce supporting evidence for its allegations.
Chief Minister Vijay Issues Direct Warning
Stepping in to quiet the uproar, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay directly addressed opposition demands for proof. He recalled that Finance Minister N. Mary Wilson had informed the Assembly a week prior about handing over comprehensive review reports covering three government departments to his office. Pointing to the documentation, Vijay remarked, "The reports containing detailed evidence are right on my table; do not force me to open them."
Chief Minister Vijay noted that he remains fully aware of when and how to speak. He stated that his government had communicated with love and affection, which earned them the mandate of the voters to serve in the Assembly. He further added that he had deliberately maintained composure so that someone might be helped in the upcoming by-elections, reinforcing his intention to reveal the findings at a strategic time.
