In an escalation of its financial oversight, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched a series of search operations at five separate locations across Kolkata and its surrounding districts on Tuesday. The operation is part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of financial irregularities and suspicious fund transfers processed through bank accounts linked to the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The agency is focused on uncovering potential money laundering and the routing of funds through various accounts. A key target of this probe is the Carevel Group, a cluster of companies operating within the aviation industry. According to the ED, between April 2023 and June 2026, approximately 160 crore rupees were transferred from TMC-associated accounts to Carevel Aviation India Private Limited and a sister concern.
Details of the Investigative Claims
The investigative agency asserts that following these transfers, Carevel Aviation India Private Limited diverted about 82.96 crore rupees to a newly formed company between the years 2023 and 2026. During the course of the raids, the ED discovered evidence suggesting that a significant portion of this capital was utilized for the procurement of an Embraer Legacy 600 aircraft and an Agusta 109 SP helicopter. According to the agency, the combined expenditure for the acquisition of these two aircraft totaled approximately 112 crore rupees.
Aircraft Leasing and Circular Transactions
Furthermore, the investigation highlights that while some foreign funding was purportedly used in the acquisition of the helicopter, the primary bulk of the capital originated directly from TMC accounts. Interestingly, once the aircraft were purchased, they were reportedly leased back to the TMC. Following this arrangement, substantial payments were made as leasing charges for the utilization of the aircraft. The ED has stated that the entire chain of transactions appears suspicious at first glance, and officials are currently working to ascertain the underlying motive and the ultimate beneficiaries of these substantial financial maneuvers.
Deep Analysis of Banking Records
The ED is currently conducting a meticulous examination of banking records and corporate documentation to determine if there have been any violations of anti-money laundering statutes. This latest operational move represents a significant step in the agency's broader investigation into financial crimes involving political entities and corporate organizations. The central agency is expected to continue its analysis of the seized materials and initiate further interrogations of individuals involved in the case, aiming to trace the complete flow of funds and identify those who gained undue financial advantage from these complex transactions.
