The Supreme Court witnessed a brief moment of levity on Tuesday during the hearing of the ongoing legal dispute between Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde over the Shiv Sena party name and election symbol. While serious legal arguments were underway inside the courtroom, loud music suddenly began echoing from outside courtroom number one, diverting attention from the proceedings.
Upon hearing the music, senior advocate Kapil Sibal made a lighthearted remark, stating that it felt like time to dance. Expressing surprise, he added that he had no idea who was playing the music, but it seemed as though someone had won an election. Sibal's playful observation brought a wave of amusement to everyone present in the courtroom.
Walking To Court From Mathura Road
During the proceedings, Sibal also shared his commuting experience of reaching the court. He mentioned that he had to walk all the way from Mathura Road to the Supreme Court in the afternoon because his car was unable to find space to move forward.
Responding to this, bench member Justice Joymalya Bagchi chimed in with a humorous observation of his own, remarking that democracy was thriving outside. Sibal agreed promptly, noting that there was no doubt about it, at least within the confines of the court. This brief exchange eased the tension in the room during a high-stakes hearing.
CJI Surya Kant Recalls Late Night Election Calls
As the hearing progressed, Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant also brought up an election-related incident. He shared that he had received one or two phone calls very late at night demanding intervention in the elections.
Following this remark, Kapil Sibal addressed the nature of petitions being brought before the judiciary. He pointed out that several issues were landing before the court that had practically nothing to do with the court's jurisdiction.
